I checked the oil level afterwards and it was all good so I'm assuming it was due to the angle the car was on?
Also does anyone else reckon the air suspension on the overlands is utter crap on corrugated roads?
Wade, ive had that alarm come up twice now on separate occasions and kill the engine - both times at 5 rocks while attempting the big sand hill so it was a fair climb. Both times it happened it was under a heavy load - i was in very soft sand and was making it work hard to slog through. Both times i restarted the engine and off we went no dramas. Wonder if its from the oil temp getting pretty hot and being on the angle splashing around it reads it as being low? Either way, my oil levels at both times was normal.

Also in regards to the corrugations - if you can leave it in normal ride height i find the bumps fine - obviously as we raise it it gets worse, but alot better then other cars ive been in.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Hymer

I learnt more today. I learnt about brake pads and discs. I thought I'd broken her.

Terrible screeching metal on metal sound coming from front drivers wheel. Husband inspects, thinks something is caught between the disc and pad. Takes wheel off (this is the part that I learnt about pads and discs and brake lines and fluids etc ).

Fixes it (didn't see anything fall though) but no more sound and braking appears to be normal. No apparent scouring on the disc either. Don't really know what it was but he is convinced I picked up a small piece of metal that lodged itself between the pad and disc.

Brake pedal was a bit spongy to begin with after all put back together but quickly came good and I have driven it around the property testing and all seems normal.

How often do things get caught between pads and discs though? Is this a relatively common occurrence for vehicles that particularly go 4WD'ing or was I just unlucky?

ETA: Potentially I drove it that way for about 10/15 minutes but because the cabin is so sealed, I didn't hear the noise until parked back at our property and it was the kiddo that picked up the noise after he had hopped out to open the bottom gate and noticed it when I drove through. I hope I haven't done any damage but husband doesn't think so.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Stones sound much the same SJandL, and mostly they are caught between the wheel and calliper, not the disk and rotor. I have managed to dislodge them by a few hard cycles of the brakes in reverse and a bit of waving the wheel around.

You have 20"s?

Cheers,
Steve

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

SJ&L,

With squeaky brakes I always spray with WD40 and that takes the squeal out altogether.

That is except the squeal when I try to pull up at the lights that is!!

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Steve, he played with it for a bit - shaking, moving etc including the calliper (which was his first thought) but it only stopped after he had levered the pad away from the disc which is why he is thinking that that is what it was.

I dunno. Shocking noise though. A bit like fingers down the blackboard but multiplied 1000 times.

Hymer - I only use WD40 on the BBQ.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Much more likely to be between the pad and rotor with 18"s SJandL. Would need to be a bloody big rock otherwise!

So it's pretty unusual, but not unheard of by any stretch. It would probably have been quite a small stone, which means that it wouldn't have done much damage if you'd just turned the music up until it went away.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks Steve. Hopefully no damage done. Thinking now I think it was the driveway where it occured.

We have a dodgy driveway that the previous owners sourced material from State Rail which included steel pins, chunks of crushed rail material and weird stuff that we just shake our heads about. Over the years we have slowly removed the obvious damaging material (but that didn't help our old Berlina Wagon that took a direct hit to the sump one morning).

It's a work in progress that we are coming close to being happy with now but potentially and randomly small bits still exist and I think I took a piece of that metal today on the Jeep. I don't think it was a stone, given the driveways history, it was probably metal but tiny, and hopefully all's ok.
