I recently towed 2.7 ton some 600km. the motor and gearbox worked flawlessly...I was VERY impressed.
Yes, the diesel has more torque, but the 3.6 has more Kw. Look at the acceleration times....very close. The 3.6 is so deliciously quiet. It uses about 25% more fuel, but I have reliability on my side ! No 3.6 head problems I can find, in a very long time.
Another interesting point. Motor oil temp, in the diesel runs around 100, the petrol runs around 90 in the same circumstances. Thus the torque converter is working in a cooler environment. Has anyone had a 3.6 go into limp mode ??
Cheers Barry
The V6 3.6 tranny is a bit different, it is a ZF design that Chrysler have modified and build under license. It is the 845RE, it also has a lower torque rating. If you do some searching you will come across failures on these trannies, particularly when towing. Here's one from last year:

Quote:
We have a 2014 JGC Limited 4X4 with the V6 and 8 speed transmission. While pulling on to a rural road about 1 week ago the vehicle lurched and wouldn't go and then went into limp mode. The transmission would only stay in 3rd gear and would not go into reverse at all
The 8hp70 is built by ZF (it is used in the diesels and the V8s) in the US, it has a higher torque rating of 700NM compared to the V6 petrol tranny with only 450NM. Sure, the rating is high enough, but it is proving to be a weak link for the 3.6.

The problems experienced with the V6 warped heads seem to be the result of the Pentastar's design:
The Pentastar engine has an unusual design. The engine's exhaust passages merge into a single outlet in the aluminum cylinder heads before exiting to the exhaust manifold. Most modern engine designs send hot exhaust gases in separate passages in the head to the exhaust manifold.
http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dl...08139957/1147#

According to Jeep this shouldn't be a problem, unless you use a certain type of petrol and have a certain driving style, etc. But it could still bite you. They are putting the number at 1%, perhaps similar to the problem rate in the diesels. But atleast the dpf issues and such can be fixed with a software change, the design of the exhaust manifolds can't be.

Anyway, horses for courses, etc. but I don't see the petrol as being any more robust than the diesel, IMO.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Just a slight correction benno, the 8hp45 is the 450nm rated one and it's installed in the petrol pentastar v6 and the 8hp70 is the 700nm rated version and is in the diesel, the SRT and I am pretty sure the hemi as well.

Further, the 8hp45 used in the jeep is a modified design but the 8hp70 is straight off the rack and shared across the German brands eg 7 series and x5

Yep, got my numbers mixed up. The 8hp70 for the diesels and v8s, built by ZF in their US factory.

The 8hp45 built by Jeep/Chrysler under license is called the 845RE. It has some tweaks added by Jeep/Chrysler, apparently.

I believe the 8hp70 is bought in from Europe built by ZF and Chrysler build the smaller one in the US.

So I consulted Dr Google and I was wrong. The ZF box in our JGCs are "buy" on the build sheet, I assumed that meant from Europe.

My apologies.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Yeah ZF set up a factory in the US to meet the Chrysler/Jeep demand.

It's pretty amazing how much improvement the 8 speed has made for the V6 petrol in acceleration.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Hi GC owners,

I am looking at a new car around EOFY time and the 4x2 Laredo is a possibility.

How is the real world fuel consumption on the 4x2 petrol? What is the instant consumption at 100kmh on a flat road?

I do a 100km road trip commute to work and 90% of this is freeway driving with some heavy traffic in the morning for about 15kms.

Just want to get an idea if the quoted fuel consumption figures are achievable from current owners.

Thanks

Does not look good on Jeep's crash rating, front wheel fell off on impact
