So even though there's a perception of slugishness/lazyness, the GC is actually moving quick enough to possibly get your licence suspended.

A petrol engine behind the same transmission will appear more lively and rev out more, but it's not necessarily going any quicker and it will be using more fuel.
I think you're right, it's just a very quiet and comfortable machine!

Lack of braking: teach the trans to do what you want.
Next time going down a long hill shift down a gear or two, then the trans will do it for you on the next hill.
Have tried manually working through the gears but I have not noticed any trans memory retention. Will try it though.

Yep, have been doing this and it works in certain conditions but generally she goes 1 gear lower and really revs outs, I then have to quickly move up a gear to compensate.

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

I've noticed that too. I figured it was just the characteristics of the turbo and the diesel, neither of which I have had before. The other thing I've noticed is that driving in Sport mode rather than Auto mode gives a completely different feel. I'm not sure yet if it affects the engine response. In Sport mode the steering is lighter and the car feels not unlike my previous Commodore SV6, great to drive. In Auto mode it feels very much like a 4x4.

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

That's interesting, I usually use sports mode on the freeway (when I remember to change it). I'll try sports in the burbs tomorrow and see if I notice anything.

If there is a change, it'll be something worth looking into as I would have thought "auto" mode would have been designed for normal road use.

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

I use sports mode around the suburbs and find it much better than Normal Mode. On the highway sometimes i will manually drop back on hills for instant pick up, I feel normal mode is programed for economy. If I drive for economy in normal mode for a week I find the auto becomes very lazy.

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

Ok, I'm now itching to test this, was hoping to test today but my wife took it down to Tweed Heads today on calls so will play tomorrow.

Strange thing is you would think "normal" actually meant "normal" city driving around the burbs. I hate taking off around roundabouts and having to really floor it to get over the initial lag to get a response.

I might dust off the manual to confirm that "normal" mode actually means "lazy, lethargic and uneconomical" mode in which case it will permanently be in "sport" mode.

Deserthucker says below in a previous model he used to put his foot down and listen to the turbo wind up - I hear nothing in our CRD.

Drove my wife's 2l TD Jetta to work today, now that is a machine that really cranks up the turbo giving you whiplash on take off, after a lag she just fires up and flies! Very zippy....

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

I thought the "sport mode" only affected the 4WD bias and disengaged the traction control. Does it also affect the gear change? The CRD I test drove was VERY quick off the mark...right up to the legal speed limit, but I did plant the go pedal.

Mine seems to gain about 500 rpm at all points in Sport mode

It doesnt specifically say it in the owners manual, but it is implies a change in gear shifts as it states "....improved handling and acceleration ...".

The acceleration bit would be either gear changes or engine tune.

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

I'll start by saying yesterday I drove my wife's zippy Auto 2lt TD Jetta, for such a small car it flies! First time I have driven it in ages.

There is a clear and distinct very noticeable difference between normal and sports on the Jetta.

I also like how it displays on the dash the actual gear it's in whether in normal drive mode or sports mode. You can clearly see from the RPM's when in either modes when the gear changes.

Having said that, the GC is a totally different piece of machinery. I have to admit this morning was the first time I actually flicked between normal and sports modes. Whilst I did notice a difference, it was not huge. Nonetheless, a slight difference does exist.

I'm hoping after the 10k service there will be a noticeable difference in performance. I'm hoping some of the updates will address the lag / lazyness issues. I remember reading after Enforcer has his 10k service he noticed a considerable zip.

BTW, my wife drive the GC every now and then and without me saying anything she too noticed it is less responsive now that when she last drove it.

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

I'll be in the same situation when our GC arrives. Though I expect it will have all the latest updates.

We have an Audi TT 2.0 TFSI DSG. There's a big difference in the amount of whiplash between normal and sport mode.

(On a totally unrelated side note ... the most annoying thing about the TT, is that everyone wants to pick a race with it. Last night it was an X-Trail of all things. And then from nowhere there was also a Hilux and a Golf. It takes a lot of restraint to ignore these guys. So all I do is pop up the active spoiler, and then let them take off like idiots. I just drive off normally. There has been one occasion when the other driver ran through a speed camera after doing this and the camera flash went off.

In a way, it's the same as drivers that must pass the SUV just because it's in front of them.)
