5 Speed Auto - CRD

I know the 5 speed vs a 7 or 8 speed auto has been discussed previously, but I read those threads before experiencing a diesel auto myself.

Now, is it me of is this transmission a little lazy? Going up hills my car gets to 2nd then 3rd then 4th but struggles to drop back down when necessary on it's own without manual intervention.

Is this why in previous threads folks have argued for a 7 - 8 speed auto? Or is something wrong with my unit?

My previous petrol cars were very responsive in the same situation so I'm guessing this

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

Could just be the deisel lag v the responsiveness of your previous petrol engine. Be interested in other opinions on your question.
My CRD laredo is pretty good, has a great kick up when at speed, but I'm comparing it to my son's 20 yo Ford Maverick TD42 deisel that I had to drive while waiting for mine to turn up, so I think my new Jeep is a racing deisel by comparison.
The only part I'm struggling with a little is the lack of engine braking at speed when I kick it down manually. Not a biggie as the rest of the truck is pure joy. Also have to be a bit more coordinated at busy 2 lane Melbourne roundabouts. That's the only time the deisel is a little scary due to lag of pick up from a stop start.

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

I've noticed something similar. Its great around town but at highway speed it seems a little lazy. Someone with some better knowledge might be able to explain but it seems to me it relies on the torque converter, there is a noticeable increase in power but not as much if it dropped back a gear. I wouldnt say it's a bad thing it still accelerates comfortably if I really need it to get around a truck it drops back and is excellent. Much better than my prado was.

Scarps you get used to the launch delay. This is compensated by the absolutely awesome pick up over the first 50 100 metres.

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

I towed my boat up to Eildon last weekend and it all cruised nicely at 110kmph, then when I had to overtake a truck, it popped up to 150kmph in what seemed like seconds. Would just like to use the gearbox to pull the speed back instead of having to brake post overtaking. Having said that now travelled 2,500km and averaging 9.5L/100km. No disappointment here:-)

Thnx, used to do that with an old XF Falcon (common fuel pump problem) until one day I forgot which car I was in, lost a boat off a trailer on a boat ramp when I got my feet confused. Decided after that event (no damage thankfully) that left foot braking not so good an idea

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

To overcome the feet confusion, wear a green coloured shoe on the right foot, and a red shoe on the left foot when launching from the ramp.
Swap shoes if you are coming back to the ramp.
Paint the brake pedal yellow, to signify a "special marker"

I think they're just factoring in the truck loads of torque this engine has.

When I test drove the one at Narellan, my first impression was that it wasnt revving and that the transmission was lazy. But then I looked at the speedo and I was travelling at 20km/h above the speed limit. So even though there's a perception of slugishness/lazyness, the GC is actually moving quick enough to possibly get your licence suspended.

A petrol engine behind the same transmission will appear more lively and rev out more, but it's not necessarily going any quicker and it will be using more fuel.

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

One trick my mate with a Cherokee CRD mentioned was to lift off with the accelerator momentarily then reboot for an instant kickdown.

Re: 5 Speed Auto - CRD

I know the WJ is a different engine 5cyl crd. But with the same transmission.
I liked the fact it would not kick down too quickly, put your foot into it and listen to the turbo wind up and start pulling hard.
Was great with the trailer on going through the hills.
Lack of braking: teach the trans to do what you want.
Next time going down a long hill shift down a gear or two, then the trans will do it for you on the next hill.
