Re: $520 for a Recovery Hook

Well I have ordered a 6000kg "soft shackle" from the UK so I can attach a snatch strap to the tow hook in an efficient and timely manner in emergency conditions. Lets see how that goes.

I would be very interested to hear what you think once you have given it a test run.

Where did you order it from?

I got it from this mob will be about $60 delivered - postage is a killer from UK.

You searched for soft shackle (12 results) - Page 1 - Force 4 Chandlery

Simply impossible to track down locally though they sell in 4x4 shops for recovery in UK

Re: $520 for a Recovery Hook

Sege, this is a bit new to me. Is a 6,000 breaking limit with a 3,000 safe working load enough? it is more than double the weight of the jeep i was looking at 8,000lb ones in the US with a safe working load of 3,628kg and a breaking load of 9,000kgs. or a 14,000lb one with a breaking strength of 31,000lb or 14,000kgs....they are double the money. what is the ideal strength? where is it best to have the weak link?

Re: $520 for a Recovery Hook

Mendo to be honest I am not sure not being an engineer. However, the hook has a sticker stating " do not exceed 4,500 kg max load" so I am playing the mid field and the break is in excess of that. Well that's the way my accountants brain works. Also if it fails I have a few grams of dynarope flying around rather than Kilos of metal!?

Thanks sege. Being an accountant also I like your thinking. I ended up getting one of these. https://www.velasailingsupply.com/Co.../colcss117.htm It was $125 delivered.

Re: $520 for a Recovery Hook

The soft shackles look the goods and one will be on my list once I see what the credit card damage is after Christmas.
A month ago the CRD shut down towing our caravan at 100kph on the Newell (couldn't be restarted, eventually diagnosed as overpressure in the fuel rail - 2 and a bit weeks at the dealers to sort - another story, another post), and we coasted best we could to the side of the road but couldn't get right off due to an embankment drop.
Fast forward to tow truck arrives and the driver says "we better drag this up the road a bit to get it safe" (yeah right!!!!). He drags out his CHAIN and wants to hook onto the front suspension. No No I've got a recovery hook.......In the end we sorted the drag of our rig using the chain and the front hook - without damage. Had the hook not been fitted and in dragging something like our 5200kg mass combination there would certainly have been front skirt damage, not to mention what the front suspension arm and wheel alignment would have been like. "Take it easy" was not in this tow truck drivers skill set.
Although my front hook was supplied free, it has already been worth the hassle to get from the dealer and fit myself.
A soft shackle will be a bit of extra insurance.
