Glad you were ok. That looks totalled and looks like the panel beaters want this "job", hopefully they will over estimate the job so the insurance classes it a write off.

Do you have the choice to get an estimated repair cost from multiple panel beaters? I'd hunt around for the one with the highest repair cost, or someone who says they cant repair it.

The doors can be straighten out and they adjustable if their touching the front(to some degree). But you will feel like crap knowing how much movement had happened.

Re: 6 day Old Jeep Grand Cherokee Accident

I doubt it will be a writeoff.
My F6 Typhoon copped a rear ender and looked much worse. $18k later it was fixed.
Problem with a rear ender, is there is not enough expensive bits damaged. If the airbags did not deploy, it will most likely be repaired.

Re: 6 day Old Jeep Grand Cherokee Accident

How did the rear vision mirror fall off so easily? So if an accident does not involve a front collision, airbags will never deploy?

Re: 6 day Old Jeep Grand Cherokee Accident

I'd say it's totaled. I know in the states (or at least my state) that if the damage exceeds a certain amount of the vehicle's value (and that being a low percentage to exceed, like here its like 50% or less i think) they will total the vehicle. If the integrity of the frame is compromised they will total it. Plus you gotta consider the safety features that went off. The safety systems are like a one shot thing. If the system sets off a feature then the whole system must be replaced... plus whatever suspension, body, and frame work needed to be repaired/replaced. plus painting and labor... it'll be a pretty penny to fix.

Re: 6 day Old Jeep Grand Cherokee Accident

Judging from the information provided in the pictures, and the fact that the active head restraints were activated, one would have to question whether there was more damage than just what is seen in the photos? Because I'm a little over 17,000 km away from you I have to make assumptions, but I would like to think that there might be additional damage below the surface. Perhaps the B, C and D pillars internally have damage? It's really hard to speculate what the damage might be, until you start looking beyond just the superficial surface replacement parts. If that much force was channeled and transferred from the rear crush zone all the way through to the front, there might be additional points of failure beneath the skin. While the repair/basher may very well want to fix the vehicle because they see a high dollar repair bill, what is your peace of mind worth? What value do you place upon your life driving around in a known damaged vehicle?

Re: 6 day Old Jeep Grand Cherokee Accident

Ah man... that's a biatch. I'd be naming your insurer and asking your JeepGarage mates who are with the same to ring in and express concern regarding their own business if similar was to occur to them. The parts wait could be very bad as mentioned. How long do you get a hire car for? As the other party is at fault, you really should get unlimited irrespective of the exact policy wording. Let the repairer provide it as a motivational exercise. I'd also suggest that you discuss with the repairer who has provided the quote that you will be exactingly thorough with the inspection of repairs... and expect an absolutely "as new" finish in every single regard. Also ensure that they have allowed for your dealer to interrogate and inspect the car to their fullest satisfaction. Demand inspection access to the vehicle at key points of the repair, and let them know that you will be bringing an independent expert. If they chicken out, ditch the repairer. Hopefully you can exhaust the pool of the willing!

As previously mentioned, the car definitely is repairable... and unlike as mentioned it will be safe transport. However I really would go to work on your insurer that as a customer service matter the vehicle should be replaced. I wish you the best for this stressful time.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: 6 day Old Jeep Grand Cherokee Accident

Just a quick update - the Jeep GC was determined to be a statutory write off and I have now received a replacement GC Limited. I have learnt the following through this experience:

1. The car is a write off if the cost of repair + the salvage value of the car exceeds or approaches the insured value of the car.
2. There is no standard for vehicle repairs in Australia and court action is only successful if the repaired vehicle deviates by more than 3mm from the manufacturers original body dimensions. There is a company in Sydney and Melbourne that will scan the car and prepare a report if you have any concerns with regard to the quality of the repair conducted.
3. The use of high strength (HS) and very high strength steel (VHS) in modern cars means that all straightening work must be conducted in a cold state (no heat applied the body work) and repairs must be conducted to the manufacturers recommendations. See WK2 Jeeps webpage for the WK Jeep accident repair manual.
4. All people I dealt with (including those from the insurance company) were very good and understanding who acted promptly and in a professional manner.
5. It is not an experience I would wish to repeat ............. ever!

Thanks to all the people who offered kind words and advice on this forum.

Lousy experience, but happy to hear all worked out.

Mine was hit from behind at a red light within 2 months old by another GC at 50pmh. Mine looks worse than yours and did $16k in damage. Truck is like new. No damage to the frame or suspension so tracks great. Other than a couple goobers that the shop did (and fixed), you cannot tell it was in a wreck.
Hope you didn't have State Farm. Those 16k were probably used for recycled or aftermarket parts.

I have a problem with that as i am currently dealing with a break in and they want to replace it with a non Chrysler/mopar glass.
