That is correct,
There is internal battery in the fob that has to be charged occasionally by being inserted into the start button port on the dash otherwise that internal battery will run down and the remote buttons for lock/unlock/rear tailgate won't work. I'm not speaking of the metal key that seperates from the fob, but the blunt end of the fob itself is the ignition key.

Re: Accessory auto timer shutdown PITA

The battery in the fob is a CR2032, which is not a rechargeable battery. There is no way to recharge a fob. If the battery fails, it requires a battery replacement. You should manage 2-3 years out of a battery.

Re: Accessory auto timer shutdown PITA

Hmmm, very different to the info I was given, was told by dealer that was the go. I cannot look in the handbook atm cars in for a service till Friday. Then again, I'm only going off what I was told upon pick-up of the car. Dealer inexperience?? Is that info in the handbook Ally?
Thanks
J.

He is incorrect and allypally is on the money. I meant to put it that the fob is not capable of accepting a charge.

Current designs do not allow you to put the fob in the dash to this point as there is no functional reason to do so. The 2014 uses the new fob with no insert end (rounded all the way).

The battery simply needs to be replaced from time to time.

Re: Accessory auto timer shutdown PITA

These dealers sell so many brands, they know very little about any of them. The Handbook refers to the battery replacement.

Re: Accessory auto timer shutdown PITA

Yep, however I have previously removed the push ignition cap in the dash and obviously when there is no cap you cannot start the car by push start (button gone), I have actually inserted the end of the fob into the lock and it turns in a cylinder like a ususal key and starts the ignition.
Are there some Overlands that do not have this?

Hang on, just re-read last 2 posts, mine is a 2012 there probably lay the difference.

Correct. Turn mechanism is going away.

New one looks different. I don't have one on me but it is rounded at both ends. Will try to find a picture and post later.

Here's a poor quality picture of a 2014 key fob. The chrome end is the base of the valet key, which can be removed through a small switch on the back.
