Advantage of 20" rims over 18"?

Waiting on delivery on the new Summit and trying to work out what/if there are actually any advantages of the 20" rims?

Reading that the 20" are not that good off road and easily damaged, so trying to work out the best solution, should I

1. Stick with the 20" Summit rims and get a complete set of 18" for off road use? (Which seems to be a pain in butt for both changing over and storage)
2. Get the Dealer to swap over the 20" for a set of 18" of a Laredo?

Apart from appearance, I can not see a reason to keep the 20"

Am I missing something?

No, you're not. A wheel only has to have a diameter large enough to clear the brakes. Beyond that requirement, the size of the wheel is a matter of appearance.
The bigger the wheel, all else being equal, the greater the unsprung weight, the greater the turning circle, and the harsher the ride.

The principal reason for 19-inch, 20-inch, and even larger wheels is bling.

My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland would be fine with 16-inch or even 17-inch wheels, but it came with 18-inch wheels, which I accept. I didn't buy a Summit for several reasons, one of which is that it has 20-inch wheels.

Perhaps people who put 21-inch or 22-inch wheels on their cars and trucks are indifferent to the dynamics of the vehicles.

Yep, the 20s are for looks. I find the laredo rims very unattractive. These look good

Off Road 18"s

I've bought some of these for my car too, they have arrived, just waiting on the car....

Re: Advantage of 20" rims over 18"?

Looks are of course subjective. The only Jeep 20s I like are the Spider Monkeys. If you’re going off road then these are just asking for to be damaged.
We got the dealer to swap the 20s that are standard on our Limited (Aus spec) for the 18s as we think they look pretty good. 18s will also have greater tyre choice and cost less to replace. The on road ride of the 20s will provide better handling with less roll.
We didn’t even think about other 18s like the black ones Benn0 is showing. Not sure we would have gone those as we do both really like the 18s we got.

Ha! The missus keeps asking me why I've bought the black ones, she thinks the laredo rims are fine.... I can't stand them.

Re: Advantage of 20" rims over 18"?

Thanks for all the replies people

I think that do I prefer the looks of the Laredo 18s over the bling bling 20s on the Summit and cant see the point of having all that extra money tied up in a second set of rims and tyres.
As far as the handling aspects I wont be wanting to take corners at high speeds.

Snuke did the dealer give you a straight swap over from the 20s to the 18s or was there a price difference between the 2?

Re: Advantage of 20" rims over 18"?

I didn’t bother looking at the placing of this thread, I thought you were in the US. You’re Perth with the black Territory.

I was negotiating a price for the car I wanted with all of the items (tow hitch, tint, etc…), I knew that the dealer would have the opposite request, a Laredo buyer wanting 20s. For that they would be charging extra, so my 20s are worth more than the 18s. I took that into account when getting the price down. I knew it gave them a few extra hundred dollars to play with (dealer said $300). With the Summit 20s being worth more apparently (I think they’re the worst looking rim available on a GC) you should be able to have a few hundred more again.

While you are doing that, think about if you will be happy with the tyres too.

Yep that would be me, down in Perth replacing the Territory with a Summit.

What do you mean when you say - Think about if I will be happy with the tires too?
Not aware that I will have much choice when it comes to the tyres?
So I was planning on just using the ones supplied until they need replacing and then put something more suitable on when the time comes.

Re: Advantage of 20" rims over 18"?

Depends on what you’re doing with them. You said you’re going off road, as you’re getting a Summit instead of an Overland I can only conclude it won’t be any crazy stuff, as the Summit is much harder to make truly off road worthy. The stock 18s (Michelin Latitudes) are not great off road tyres, I wouldn’t say they’re great on road tyres either. I find they slip a little too easily on wet grass, but that is also the 4WD system letting it down until I switch it to the ICE setting. They haven’t done anything wrong on road, but they aren’t spectacular either.
There is a thread here all about getting A/T 18s for those that spend a lot of time off the bitumen.

So if you have any doubts about the tyres being suitable, the time to get them changed is before they get used. Negotiate it as part of the deal that the tyres are replaced.
If you think you will never need to out a different tread on, then leave them as they are.

Re: Advantage of 20" rims over 18"?

Well worth the question Snuke and a question I would not have really thought of.
Pretty easy for the dealer to swap a set of rims and tyres from one vehicle to another, gets a bit more complicated when you say I want those rims and I want these tyres.

But you never know unless you ask.

I would say it will be some time before the Summit is set up and I buy all the off road equipment once again, so will see how well the stock 18s perform

Re: Advantage of 20" rims over 18"?

You would probably be better off buying the rims online (a dealer was selling them of $50 a rim recently, but they went quick). This guy seems to have plenty of stock:

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 18" | Wheels, Tyres & Rims | Gumtree Australia Brisbane North East - Hamilton | 1029604357

You will be able to sell the summit rims with rubber on them for plenty.

Re: Advantage of 20" rims over 18"?

I quiet like these posted by Wahoo over in the Official Wheel Tread (both the Rims and Tyres)

May stop and have a chat with a couple of tyre places when I get back to Perth, see if I can make some sort of deal on some rims and decent tyres in exchange for the Summit rims and Tyres.

Never had much luck selling anything personally, either sit on the items for long periods of the time or I end up basically giving the stuff away dirt cheap after paying top dollar!
