Alloy wheel query

Hey guys, just interested to know if anyone else has anything similar to the pic attached on their MY13/MY14 Jeep GC Limited alloys? Mine is only a week old but i've noticed some rust spots on the inner section of the wheel on what appears to be a painted surface and just wondering if this is normal?

It's not part of the wheel, its the hub of the brake drum. And yes at some time in the cars life they will rust as the heat from the brakes breaks down any paint that has been applied. The only remedy is to clean it all off and apply heat resistant paint.

Regards

Adriwood.

Re: Alloy wheel query

There are a few posts littered around about this, and people removing the wheels to apply a clear heat resistant pint as adriwood suggested.

Here is another thread related too it as well.

Possible fix for preventing Rusty Hubs

Re: Alloy wheel query

Re: Alloy wheel query

The rotors are cast iron with an anti corrosion coating on them that comes off very easily with solvents like thinner.

It could have been that during OUR they used a solvent to remove adhesive that left that spot exposed.

My guess is it may take 4 to 6 weeks to rust like that.

Thanks Jeep_addicted - what do you mean by "OUR"?
Is what I'm hearing that unless I put another coating on they are going to all rust anyway? does it look that bad when they do?

Re: Alloy wheel query

Being the disk rotor hats are cast iron, they would take 10+ years to rust to a level that would risk structural issues.
You could paint it with any "rust guard" type paint and it will give it protection. Personally I would not bother.
If you stick you head under the car, you will see lots of rusting iron parts, car companies are trying to save money over looks.

Re: Alloy wheel query

I think the rotor will wear out long before the rust damages it.

Re: Alloy wheel query

It is common for rotor's to rust on cars that dont move, even new. Who know's how many weeks the car was sitting at the depot, shipping yard and what not. Usually goes once driven and brake applied. However off the disc hub itself, I dont know....

Rotors itself, happens on all cars.

Sorry I meant PDI (predelivery inspection)

I was using my kindle when I typed that and for some reason the damn kindle thinks that it is in charge. I typed the letters three times and it kept changing it to what it wanted.

Re: Alloy wheel query

Just an update folks - it went in to the dealership today to get a few things fixed up. I listed a query around the brake rotor hats being rusty and they have removed the wheels and repainted them. Hopefully lasts a bit longer.
