Almost into a Jeep

Hi all,
i've been lurking for a short while reading up and learning about the new Jeep. I'm 95% sold on one but I have a couple of small things to consider and questions that need answering.

I finally managed to take a Limited CRD for a test drive a few days ago. I wasn't really sure what to expect when it comes to diesel cars as I've never owned (nor driven one, for that matter) before. the numbers on paper look fairly inviting, but coming from a tuned Ford Territory turbo with close to 300kw and 600nm of torque, it would be too much to ask from the Jeep to keep up. Anyway, guess I'll have to adapt....

I need to confirm that my 3 kids will fit comfortably in the back, as they do quite well now in the Terri, and they will all only get bigger. They are currently 13, 10 & 8.

Looking at an Overland CRD, as I tow a van at 2.5T.
Does the SLS (Quadra-lift) require a WDH?

I'm sure I'll think of more before too long.

BTW, what have people been getting them for? Every dealer just quotes full retail, even after we talk trade-in with my Terri. PM if necessary.

Looking forward (hopefully) to continuing on this forum.

Cheers,
Matty

Re: Almost into a Jeep

Matty,
You said you test drove a Limited, so you should know the available room in the back seat for kids. I would imagine 3 would fit reasonably comfortably, but with kids, if they cant kick and wave their arms around, they will become restless after a few hours. Would be the same for the TTG.
You are not going to find the power you have in your "tuned Territory", but the CRD JGC I drove was impressive, and you won't get whiplash every time you hit the accelerator. If you think you would miss the power, you could always consider the JGC SRT, which I am certain would blow away your current ride with a little enhancement, if not already. But then, the price will be in excess of $90k.
The CRD will easily tow 2.5T. There was a woman commenting on Jeep's Facebook page yesterday that she easily towed a 3.5T horse Trailer with no issues.
I am unable to answer your WDH question.
You can get discounts... it's a matter of negotiation, but all dealers will try to stick to the brochure price.

Re: Almost into a Jeep

I also went form a TTG to a CRD Overland and it was a great move.
You can get a plugin tuner for the CRD for about $300 that will give you 650nm of torque and about 40hp more. This may give you a little added kick, but nothing short of an X5M or ML65 will come close in performance.
As for pricing, the dealers are more likely to do a better job on the tradin than the base price, but you never know. I paid RRP, but got $30k trade on my 2006 TTG and got a towbar thrown in.

Re: Almost into a Jeep

Interesting how many of us have come from Ford Territorys.

The Jeep is much better finished off and has a better level of Std equipment IMO

This I completely agree with.
Was initially going to go with a new diesel Terri but it just doesn't do it for me anymore, a bit underwhelming really.

I have a overland hemi and tow our 2.5tonne van around without my WDH fitted, the load leveling works really well

Re: Almost into a Jeep

We've moved from a Prado 8 seater but with 2 kids seating was never an issue. It seems to me the is plenty of room for 3 in the back.

As most of us WK2 owners will testify, we're very happy with our cars and are very happy with our decisions.

Having said that, there are a few too many "teething" problems for my liking, and I'm beginning to sense disappointment / frustration setting in within the forums. Why these basic faults are occurring is anyone's guess but I suspect it relates to QA or even lazy / unqualified production workers slapping them together.

An example of a basic fault: On our export RHD cars, some bright spark on the production line routed the park brake warning lamp wiring the same route as he did a million times prior on the LHD units. The result is the park brake pedal wears down or strains the wire which when the park brake is NOT engaged, it sets off the park brake light on the dash along with the chime whilst you're driving. The quick remedy is to depress the park brake 1 notch.

Another example: Engine cuts out after starting (runs for 1-2 seconds the dies). You then have wait a minute or 2, get out, lock it, unlock it and try again. There appears to ne no TSB for this fault and a few of us are struggling to get anywhere with Jeep.

There are others you can read about in the forums.

These are faults that should have been picked up ages ago but complacency or other obstacles have gotten in the way.

Yes "faults" are common for most manufacturers but most other manufacturers take measures to get the basic ones out of the way before they go to market. I have to say, I had my my Prado Grande 150 series for 7 years, the only fault I experienced was a fault with the machining of 1 rotor, it was immediately replaced and the only problem in 7 years was solved.

Do I regret the purchase, no I don't, I just love this car. I'm just disappointed that more care on the production line, particularly their Export line where processes may get a little confusing for the workers.

There's my rant.

Re: Almost into a Jeep

Keep a 10mm spanner int he glovebox to undo the battery. It is under the drivers seat for anyone wondering where it is.

Re: Almost into a Jeep

I've managed to organise an extended test drive of one for next week, most likely Tuesday. This will allow me to give it a good run, let SWMBO have a good run in it and then pick up the 3 kids from school and see how they all fit. We do a lot of long distance driving so I don't want them to feel cramped in there.

Looking forward to this....

As an aside, I spoke to another dealer recently and he mentioned that there was an aftermarket company here in Melb (not sure, maybe Brown Davis or LRA) that were in the process of engineering a sub tank to fit under the rear floor. He reckons it will hold close to 90lt.
Anyone heard of this?
This would be a huge bonus when touring with my 2.5T van. 180lt on board would potentially give me close to 1000k's....

Cheers,
Matty

Re: Almost into a Jeep

OK, took one for a 5 hour test yesterday.
The dealer only had a petrol V6 Limited registered (DP's car), but that didn't matter.
One thing it did show me though, there's no way I would ever get the V6 petrol...far too gutless....lol
This allowed me to do all the things as a family we need (grocery shop, fit the kids in with bags etc).
Kids love the car. No complaints from the back seat about the space, so all good there.

Basically just gotta find the best deal I can now on an Overland CRD.
