Re: Anyone else with burnt/damaged DRLs?

Glenn,

Can they be used for the DRLs as well?

Re: Anyone else with burnt/damaged DRLs?

The ad does not mention DRL's but I see no reason why not, however they have a "focal" lens rather than dispersing the light. Because the DRL's have that fancy piece of plastic with the JEEP logo in front of the globe, I reckon the emitted light might get obscured. I bought the same LEDs that I have in my DRL's and put them into my stop/tail's but whilst they were great as tails, the stop light wasn't bright enough for me. The latest CREE's I have just installed are great in the rears.

They look good. I read somewhere that using red LEDs in stop lights despite the lens already being red, produces a deep intense red. Has anybody tried this?

Re: Anyone else with burnt/damaged DRLs?

OK, just got home from a long 8hr drive and lo and behold the new DRL (passenger side only) has started to fog above the newly installed LED. The LED runs pretty cool and there is no sign of scorching of the globe holder so I can only assume its some residue burning off the LED.
Here's something you guys with damaged DRL's might want to try. I got a clean lint free micro fibre cloth and removed most of the "fogging" by poking the towel wrapped around my index finger in through the hole for the lamp. Using a crudely bent coat hangar through the cloth, I removed most of the rest. I reckon something a bit more substantial would have enabled me to get all the fogging out....not sure if you can still buy them, but a pipe cleaner would do the trick. Anybody running standard globes want to try to see if you can clean out the fog/scorching?

Well that's a surprise! I wouldn't have expected that. But actually LEDs do run hot but not as hot and not in the light output area. They run hot in the base where the circuitry is. That's why LED down lights have those large cooling fins in the base area. Perhaps the problem has always been fumes emanating from the plastic socket where we have seen the scorch marks. At least you have proven that LEDs are not necessarily the solution to the reflector fogging problem.
