They noted it in my vehicle's service history and said that when they had a look at the lights, there was no heat damage to the sockets. They compared the reflector of the DRL on mine to the other JGCs in the workshop and all the reflectors showed similar hazing! Nonetheless, it is on the record and they agree there is hazing to the reflector.

I will see what response I get from Shona at HQ

Re: Anyone else with burnt/damaged DRLs?

I had a long conversation with Shona regarding this issue, along with the stuck in sand and satnav issues.

see my post in this thread:

Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Selous, thanks for the heads up in the post mentioned - checked the GC - my sockets have clearly got way too hot at some point - melted around to top on both sides...

I've just had the 10k service and am waiting on a new gps receiver, new EGR valve, Sand issue software... and now I need my lights fixed. The EGR will take 6 weeks and is comnig from the US... I'll try and make sure my error is fed back through the correct channels so the guys in Melbourne are aware.

Re: Anyone else with burnt/damaged DRLs?

My replacement LED's arrived today - 13 days from order ex China
eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d
pretty good service I thought.
I haven't taken up the issue with the dealer yet, I'll do that at the 30k in 6 weeks or so, and in the meantime I am keen to see what the LED's look like and as they were burning a hole in the bench I went ahead and installed them.
The sockets on both sides showed heat damage, and one thing I did notice when checking just before I pulled out the filament bulbs is that park w is 7, driving is 27, but when the engine is started both filaments are lit making 34w total - may account for some of the heat.
I discovered also that if the bulbs are in round the wrong way - they don't work - turn 180 deg and fine.
Took about 20min all up including wrestling with the air inlet on the LH side.

John, do you have any photos with the LEDs installed?
Thanks

Re: Anyone else with burnt/damaged DRLs?

No, I didn't take any with the DRL's on - I don't think much difference would show in a daylight photo - and others have posted pics of theirs in this thread.
What I did do is check the illumination of the LED's before fitting the holder back into the headlight - with parkers on the LED's looked pretty bright, then pressing the button to start and the LED's lit up much brighter - just the way the filament bulbs looked.
Just looking at the DRL's on with the naked eye they look much the same - I really won't be worried about them being brighter or less than the filament, as long as they don't generate the heat.

Re: Anyone else with burnt/damaged DRLs?

THe combined wattage of 34watts is not extreme. Afterall, the standard lowbeam headlight is 55watts.
There is obviously faulty components in those holders.
Mine are very bad, which was probably as a result of driving non-stop Sydney-Melb, then the same return journey. Those little bulbs were burning for 10hrs at a time, and it was an extremely hot day. If Fred Bloggs driving his Ford Falcon did not melt his lights on the same day, what does that indicate? I don't think we are saying the Falcon's are over engineered.

It pays to shop around.

It does pay to shop around for servicing costs. If you work out the time spent against the labour charge, you best be sitting down. I sent you a pm in the caravan forum with the other info.
