Anyone using 285/50/20 tyres?

Hi everyone,
well the Kumhos have lasted 54780ks.

Time for new shoes.

Has anyone tried 285/50/20's ? I am looking at Cooper Zeon LTZ.

I have read of 275's but cannot find anything on the 285's.

Any info or opinions please.

Thanks

John.

Both will fit 285/50 or 275/55 my investigations have revealed on of them and sorry I can't remember which one, but one is quite a bit cheaper than the other.

Re: Anyone using 285/50/20 tyres?

I had the 285/50/20 Cooper Zeon LTZ on my car for a few months.
Good tire and no rubbing at any angle. My only compliant is the tire was horrible in light snow or any trace of ice.

Thanks MOFSTEEL

Oh, we were going to take it to the snow to show the children. They have not seen snow.

By the way, watching your build thread with great interest. Congrats.

John.

Using the 285/50/20 no rubbing , on gravel they sit nicely at speed but as with all aggressive patterns is noisier than a road tyre
On bitumen Depends if you drive with the window down

Re: Anyone using 285/50/20 tyres?

Well, I'll take the doghouse, its worth it. The tyres really look great on the Jeep.

Tyres sit nice within the guards. There is a slight road noise from the tyres, like a hum at 60km/h. As has been mentioned, use the radio.

Cannot be any worse than the noise coming from the old tyres last night on the expressway returning from Sydney back to Maitland. That was atrocious, I don't remember that racket before, maybe because they were worn down too much maybe.

As for ride, not much different around town, I'll wait till I go to Newcastle or the by-pass and see what happens ride wise.

I'll try and get some pics tonight if anyone is interested.

Re: Anyone using 285/50/20 tyres?

Apologies for the delay in replying with the photos, but here they are.
If anyone needs any more I have heaps, just message me your email address and I can send them through.

I had to leave the Jeep stuff alone for a while, fuming just a little as my previous starter motor problem flared up again. Usual crap from Jeep Customer NO ASSIST. New thread to follow on this.

My findings/opinion on these tyres:

1/ A little slippery in wet, hope what I have heard re wax being warn off new tyres is correct. Not too bad but just noticeable on a round about and such.

2/ They have lifted the car up noticeably, I can tell by driving it and of course in situ in the shed.

3/ Noise, a slight hum around town, quite noticeable on a Freeway drive. But that's what a wireless is for, to drown out the hum.

4/ Now this is a surprise to me, there is a steep incline I travel almost every day and you take off from a 'Stop' sign. I have noticed that the first gear stretches out a few seconds longer than it used to. I noticed this when I drove home on the new tyres as the incline is only 400 metres from the tyre service.

5/ Speedo's. There was a 3-4 km discrepancy between the digital speedo and the dial speedo, now they are pretty much aligned.

6/ These Coopers look a whole lot better than the standard and make the originals look like elastic bands.

7/ These tyres make the car look the goods.

8/ These tyres make the Overland look shit hot.

Hope this helps.

Re: Anyone using 285/50/20 tyres?

I Just put the same Cooper Zeon LTZ on my 2014 GC Overland.
Are you still happy with them? Have you been off road much? I saw another thread from the US that warns to avoid these tyres due to cracks in the side walls. Have you noticed anything like this?
I'm planning to drive from Perth to Victorian high country and Tasmania towing a Jayco Swan Outback next month.
Hoping these Tyres are up to the job.

Re: Anyone using 285/50/20 tyres?

I've had these tyres for about 25k kms now, and am very happy with them. Dont get off-road as often as I'd like (who does?), but they have done great on sand, rock, and gravel. No excessive wear or tear that I've noticed.

Downsides are a bit more road noise, and slightly higher fuel consumption.
