Re: ARB Bullbar Delayed

Last update I heard from Sam at ARB marketing was 4 weeks ago. Development is underway and I believe they have already done the 3D scan of a GC.

The plan is for an ARB Deluxe Combination winch bar. The part number will be 3450410.

Nothing newer than that at the moment.

Correct, one of my neighbours WK2 was used for the scan several weeks ago.

By "combination" I assume they mean with or without a winch. Something like this on a Dodge Ram maybe?

Yep. Or you can see the WH one too ...

Deluxe combination bar | Products | ARB 4x4 Accessories

However until they actually do the prototype testing, then they cant be sure.

The ARB St Peters branch manager was telling me how they got to testing the new bar for the Colorado and it wasnt until ARB had got it offroad that they discovered it was twisting the front subframe. So they had a further 3 month delay while they re-engineered the mounting system. It was supposed to be released last October or so, but the first ones are only hitting the market now.

Google Prado 120 cracks to see what an inadequately tested bullbar can do.

I deliberately chose the Ram pic because while it is related it is one gosh awful car. Apologies to anyone who owns one. That bull bar on the WK2 can only look better.

I take your point about testing. Unfortunately, with CAD CAM and the pressure to produce new models, engineers are not allowed the on-road testing they would like. This is reflected in the fall in reliability of the otherwise wonderfully engineered German cars. Let's hope ARB take their time.

Regarding the problems with the Prado and Colorado, both of these have chassis unlike the WK2 which is monocoque. I'm not saying it is necessarily better just that the situation is quite different. With the Prado and Colorado the problems seem to be due to relative movement between the body and the chassis. With the Jeep, it is all one. Anyone who has tried to run wiring through the WK2 will know that it is a maze of cavities. Many areas are effectively double skinned with diaphragms every so often frustrating wire feeds. This all leads to incredible stiffness. The Grand flexes like a rock. Mine more so with the rock rails. I would be most surprised if the Jeep has similar problems. However, the WK2s have not been subjected to anywhere near the outback thrashing that Parados and Colorados have had. Time will tell.

Re: ARB Bullbar Delayed

Any bull bar is going to look bad now, as it is very difficult to engineer.
With this sort of accessory for a car you need: good price, functional and looked good. You can only choose 2. All the nannie laws like pedestrian safety and airbag systems mean a lot of engineering needs to go into making this product. In saying that I bet ARB are a bit shocked by the amount of JGC's sold here.

Re: ARB Bullbar Delayed

I understand the differences in build types. And Bob, you raise a good point about monocoque versus separate chassis, and relative movement of the body.

The point I was making is that until they test a bullbar on a real car, they wont know for sure what the final product will be and when it will be available.

I fully understand your point and totally agree. If I sounded critical, I was critical to the auto industry not you. With things like CAD CAM, Six Sigma and Lean, the industry is more confident that they have it right the first time so testing budgets are slashed compared to what they used to have. I my view, nothing beats hooning around the outback till the car falls apart, rebuild it and do it again, but then I'm an old fart.

Re: ARB Bullbar Delayed

According to 4X4 Australia, February 2013 issue, the top 5 4X4 wagons in terms of sales for the year ending November 2012 were:
Toyota Prado_______ 1236
Jeep Grand Cherokee_ 880
Toyota LandCruiser___ 847
Mitsubishi Pajero_____ 761
Suzuki Grand Vitara__ 338
Guess which is the only one that doesn't yet have an ARB bull bar?
