Auixiliary fuel tank for WK2

Guys,

There's a post on http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com in the Grand Cherokee forum, about a member loaning his WK2 to Long Range Automotive to develop an auxiliary tank. They expect to get around 85 extra litres.

Imagine that, a touring range in the CRD in excess of 2000 kms. Though you would need to book an appointment in your diary if filling at a slow flow diesel bowser.

Works starts towards the end of June.

Re: Auixiliary fuel tank for WK2

Yep, one of the dealers I've been speaking with mentioned that one was being developed.
He mentioned close to 90lt so I'd put faith in that too.

Re: Auixiliary fuel tank for WK2

The Prado had a 180lt tank which was great. Though:

Pros - pull into servo once a month on average

Cons - 7 to 10 min fill time!
- Dirty looks from people queued behind you for taking so long
- Can't check your email on iPhone whilst filling

Best shot is to send Long Range Automotive an email

Re: Auixiliary fuel tank for WK2

Just use HiFlow pumps , I use a high flow near my place, doesnt quite fit in the fuel filler but good enough. Just need to listen for where its about to overflow because there is no cut off.

Re: Auixiliary fuel tank for WK2

I dont think the use of a high flow pump will give you any additional fuel storage. It will only shorten the time taken to load the fuel.
I assume you had a slight brainfreeze?

No need for a coathangar etc to hold open the little flap down the nozzle? I might give a HF a go but maybe waterproof overalls might be the best attire! Even thats not too much of a drama as fill ups only occurs every 1000kms

Re: Auixiliary fuel tank for WK2

I just got off the phone with Long Range Automotive.
The aux tanks are almost done.
They have had a hemi one in and got 75lt tank made for it.

Next week they are getting a CRD in to check the fitment of that.

One interesting thing he mentioned. The reason they need to check the CRD fitment is because it only runs a single exhaust outlet, not the twin like the Hemi does, is this correct?
I was under the impression that the V6 petrol ran a single exhaust and the Hemi and CRD were both twin outlets (one on each side).

If the CRD only has a single outlet he said they could possibly get a bit more capacity into the tank as they don't need to clear the exhaust on one side.

As I don't have mine yet (and I was sure the CRD has a twin outlet exhaust) and you all confirm this please.

Re: Auixiliary fuel tank for WK2

The CRD has twin pipes, the same as the Hemi

Re: Auixiliary fuel tank for WK2

Thinking if you tap into the woolies 20cent off a litre monthly fuel special, this could pay for itself over 5 years as well as just topping up when you see a good price. It's on the list but may have just risen a notch or two seeing the bullbar options seem a little slow.

Yep....it's definately one of the first things I will be doing when I get mine.
168lt on board and towing my van would still give me well in excess of 1000k's range and close to 2000k's when not towing.

As the maximum amount you can buy in one transaction at Woolies is 150lt, you'll save $30. I do 500k's a week easily so doing the sums (roughly) means;

$30 x 12months = $360 per year
$360 x 5yrs = $1800.

I was told to expect a price between $17-1800 fitted

Win win.....
