Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

Hey folks. Some interesting comments on DAB+.

I bought my GC in October, so, it being supposedly the latest incarnation of the model it has function DAB+. Well, when I'm in Melbourne it does. But out here in the sticks, about 2 hour's drive east of Melbourne, there is no DAB+ service.

When I was driving home DAB started cutting out around Pakenham (about 45 mins. drive from Melbourne CBD - on a good day). So I flicked over to FM (I was listening to 3MMM).

I was wondering - is there any way to improve the long range reception of the DAB receiver?

Where I live we have two AM commercial stations, both of which are woeful, ABC on the FM band and 2 or 3 commercial FM stations which play doof-doof music. So, I tend to use up a fair bit of my phone's data when using TuneIn Radio to stream Melbourne (or other) stations.

Wish U-Connect had Apple Play. When I played with it in a Pajero that I test drove I found it rather nifty.

Sadly DAB has very limited range, period.

I doubt you'll see it in country areas for a long time- if ever.
I just use my own music on an SD card when out in the sticks, or Spotify when I have have plenty of data still available on my phone plan.

As for Apple Play, yes that would be nice, but I suspect we'd both need to buy next year's model for that

Cheers

Here is a map of the coverage for DAB in VIC. Looks like Pakenham is indeed on the edge of "rural coverage"

Apart from not having DAB+ outside of the Metro area the thing I hate most about DAB is when a really good song is on... you have it loud as the quality is so good and you are singing along... only to have it lose the signal and you hear yourself singing....realising that you really can't and shouldn't sing..

Guess where I live, Beaconsfield just before Pakenham. Berwick side of Beacy is not to bad depending on any hills in the way once you hit Beacy it all depends on the station and once you get to Officer/Pakenham its all over.

Even after all that I still prefer the DAB.

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

I was listening to Triple M on dab the other day. I switched between FM and DAB to compare.

To be honest I couldn't really tell the diff. Maybe it's the car's acoustics, given how noisy it can be. The Limited has allegedly better speakers so I don't know how that improves things over the Laredo if it's not equipped with the same level of sound equipment.

I have a CD in the player. It's a bought one, not one loaded with compressed MP3s. It's clarity doesn't seem to be any better or worse than a DAB broadcast.

But there are other features that's attractive for DAB. Info on what's playing, for example. But this is reliant on the broadcaster fully implementing it. On the day that I was in Melbourne and playing with it not many of the stations were doing it.

Maybe it's a medium better set up in the home stereo system.

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

Triple M is hard to gauge as the DAB station is different to the FM station.
We had WSFM on the other day and it is replicated on DAB and there was a definite difference in quality. More so when you turned up the volume.
The biggest difference though is AM to DAB.
The best way to tell the difference is on ABC Grandstand listening to the cricket.
Either way the base sound system in the Laredo is pretty good in comparison to similar vehicles and DAB is a bonus when it works 😉

How's it different (other than the broadcast type) when they're playing the same stuff?

As I said, I swapped between FM and DAB when listening to the same song. I couldn't pick it. But that's me.

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

haha... umm yes, my fault.. I was tuned to Triple M Classic Rock... entirely different.
Changed over while I was out and I agree... at lower sound levels there is negligible difference... once the volume comes up there is a definite difference in clarity... maybe it is less interference...
But each to their own I guess...

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

DAB is transmitted digitally, FM is analog. If the signal degrades on FM it starts to get noisey, if its less extreme you start losing clarity. With DAB as the signal degrades unless its really bad the error recovery algorithms correct the bits in error and you notice no difference. If it gets too bad it just stops.

Even with good FM though, DAB sounds to me like it has more dynamic range and cleaner.... But yes not a huge difference if the FM signal is ideal.

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

How do you folks think that DAB+ performs compared to say streaming the same station from an app such as TuneIn Radio Pro?

That's really only my option if I want to listen to anything decent when I'm not in either a DAB+ or metro FM reception area.

I'd love it if the likes of Triple M would repeat their broadcasts out in rural areas. Either that or that the local incumbents started dishing up something decent for us to listen to.

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

So i just pulled off the trim and found the two antenna points for the DAB antenna. If i buy the Pioneer Antenna and the SMB Male adapter, which antenna line does it connect to? there are two? and what is the other one for? i believe its a dual Fakra adapter?
