Wow - great thinking, and very interesting...

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

I have removed surround of the uconnect and pulled out and unplugged one of the antenna sockets (cant remember what colour). I then inserted the end of a piece of wire that was about 1 metre long to the fakra socket and hit the dab button and scanned in the channels and then listened to a station on dab.

So i think we need to add a dab antenna or maybe replace the shark fin antenna with one from a my15 model (which would include DAB). Just need to double check where the coax goes to at the moment.

Interesting, so the cable should be in place - just not the antenna, so maybe there's a join in the back area like Barboots has said, making it easy to just add in an antenna will look for that shortly.

How easy was it to pull out the Uconnect unit ? Are there instructions somewhere for that ?

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

Was pretty easy, pull the surround from bottom first. Flip up the cover that hides the sd/usb slots etc and grab the surround and give it a little tug and work your around. Unplug the cable from the surround. Once the surround is removed there are four screws (hex type) holding the uconnect in place, remove screws. Pull out and you now have access to the coax connectors etc at the rear of the uconnect

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

We may need to use a DAB splitter to have the sharkfin antenna drive both FM and DAB inputs. This will save having a second antenna for the DAB.

Will need to do some research and check the connectors that are in place.

Barboots - did you take a pic of the connectors in the rear quarter panel ?

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

Pull the boot quarter trim. I'm confident what I saw is a coax junction. Back then we were certain that the hardware wasn't in the head unit, so I never bothered investigating further. It'd be interesting to know if/when the hardware was introduced, especially now I have a slightly later model.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

Just be careful with a splitter. I tried a powered one of eBay and whilst it worked it blew the radio fuse also not long after that. Problem is the antenna needs phantom power as it is a amplified antenna. Splitter must also pass the correct frequency to the radio for dab for it to work.

No I didn't mate. As I mentioned, I was poking around in my early MY14 when I saw it, but back then it was "a sure thing" that DAB couldn't be enabled.

It's 99% guaranteed to be a junction in the antenna feed with a spare port. I wouldn't send you on a wild goose chase. Seize the glory... I'd do it but I'm East and my car is West.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Australian 2014 GC with DAB

My Australian JGC has 2 cables wired into the sharkfin antenna. It is cabled through the right rear quarter panel area. The yellow connector looks like the DAB which was unplugged for checking only. I believe this would have been wired right through to the radio. I have no DAB stations so I will need to find a better signal location to see if it works. Hopefully, it does not need to be enabled by software.

The photo shows the connections under the sharkfin antenna:
