Re: Australian Extended Warranty

Choice outlines that the ACL guarantees are equal to or greater than any supposed benefits you're paying for under an extended warranty policy.

Interesting

And here page 11

Lucky I'm use to reading legal documentation.

Thanks zzkazu

And just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water!!
Now I'm confused again........do I need to go for extended warranty or not!

Our present 06 Nissan Patrol has extended warranty and haven't needed to use it but the main reason for taking it out was some degree of insurance against the 3l motor going bang.
With the totally different level of sophistication and complexity of the WK2 I believed that extended warranty would definitely be the go. Even more so given my concern about the dealer we'll likely end up using for service.
Certainly the reason for my research at this time was to try to find a quality provider with a value for money package.
I'll continue to spend far too much time on the internet - wish our new Jeep was here so I could stop all this messing around. I've got stuff to fit up so we can go and use the thing.

I'm forming the opinion NO. I have asked chrysler

"I'm looking to take this extended warranty out on my New Grand Cherokee.
Could you outline what this warranty provides over and above the
consumer's rights under the consumer guarantees in the new Australian
Consumer Law."

For the big issues like engine, transmission etc. you will be covered under the Consumer Guarantees, and as the issue would be classed a 'major failure' the consumer has the choice to either to refund/replace/repair.

So a 4WD should be fit for purpose for any timeframe that an extended warranty would cover.

Also pls note:

MANUFACTURERS’ WARRANTIES (S102)

6.1 A manufacturer is not obliged to provide a written manufacturer’s warranty. However,if one is provided it must:

clearly identify the extent of the warranty and the claims process; and
clearly identify the name of the person giving the warranty and how they may be contacted.

6.2 All manufacturer’s warranty cards or statements must now also contain the following prescribed text:

“Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the
Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a
major failure and for compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss
or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the
goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a
major failure.”

6.3 To give manufacturers time to change their warranty cards, the above provisions do not come into effect until 1 January 2012. Manufacturers and importers with long
lead times for supply need to put processes in place now to ensure that by 2012 the
warranty cards in all stock they hold will comply with these new provisions

So I'll be ensuring mine comes with this clause.

Re: Australian Extended Warranty

I notice lately jeep GC's in the USA now come with a five year warrantee. Surely we should be getting this now down under. Also we are being ripped of with having to have a diesel service every 10K for around $450 upwards just for an oil change filter, overseas this is also different. Jeep is going to loose a lot of prospective customers for these and other issues. Any other parts cost a literal fortune, far in excess of what they should be and in comparison with prices in the USA
jeep has become a massive disappointment and now I looking elswhere for a new vehicle, they just don't seem to get it and think by remaining silent their problems will go away. It is not the dealers but Jeep themselves down under seems they lack some real leadership who can make proper decisions, and they need to do it quick!

What it does confirm is that the additional benefits that you are paying for above and beyond the ACL relate to towing, car rental, accommodation. All the important stuff like defects are covered. Also the ACL can't waived by Chrysler or the dealer.

So is the money worth the cost of those additional benefits, I think not, and yes a complete reversal by me on this subject once I started to research the ACL.

Re: Australian Extended Warranty

I only bought the Jeep because of the new ACL's as I had heard the horror stories about problems, but it seems that these horror stories are no worse than any other car maker. The main problem people have is with the availability of parts. Under the ACl's the way I read them, IF there is a parts problem that causes your car to be off the road, they need to make good. This means paying for a loan car or providing you with a new car if the delay is considerable. I would expect that if a motor blows and Jeep say 8 weeks to replace, you could get a full refund, new car or make good by means of compensation.
Being in business I do not like the new ACL's as they are very weighted to the consumer, but as a new car buyer, it is great. I figure I will wait to get the extended warranty, as it may not be worthwhile if the ACL's really do have the teeth they claim.

Re: Australian Extended Warranty

Yes if engine blows it's obviously classed as a major fault and as such the consumer has the choice of replace, repair or refund.

Re: Australian Extended Warranty

I have had a reply direct from Chryco au.
The Official warranty is underwritten by Swann, as Hickers said. I called up Swann to find out more details and it can only be sold at point of sale of the new car, or if Swann are given permission to market to us directly before our standard warranty expiry. Unfortunately Chryco have not signed this approval for some time, although Swann want them to.

To go direct to Swann is VERY expensive as they only offer a 24 or 36month/200,000km extension. Because they are a class 4 car, they will not offer a 100,000km option.
Costs:
24/200,000 $3305 nil excess ($2760 with $100 excess)
36/200,000 $3870 nill excess

I am not going to run out and buy any warranty.

Re: Australian Extended Warranty

If I thought the car needed an extended warranty, I wouldn't be buying it.
