Axle Corrosion

You may have already seen this post http://jeepgarage.org/showpost.php?p=638939&postcount=1 . The WK2 had done only 48,000km. So I thought I'd check out my wheels. After only 5,000km, I too have corrosion. At this stage it is little more than surface corrosion but more than one would expect on a new car. The rear axles were considerably worse than the front. I cleaned them up and sprayed some WD40 on them. I'll be keeping an eye on it. If it gets worse a more potent corrosion inhibitor may be required. It's not like the wheel is about to fall off any time soon but it's not a good look. I suggest people check out their spindles particularly if your WK2 has been to the beach.

Re: Axle Corrosion

Thanks for this Bob.

Valvoline make something called Tectyl 506 rust preventative. It's basically a spray on petroleum wax. Maybe this might be suitable.

That sounds perfect. Machine importers use petroleum waxes to protect exposed bare metal. I'm surprised Chrysler doesn't do that particularly for vehicles facing long sea voyages. All they have done is roughly sprayed the under-body with some black gunk.

Re: Axle Corrosion

I checked mine at 10,000klm and it also showed signs of rust here as well as drive shafts and other components . I have since had the car rust proofed and treated the other parts .

Re: Axle Corrosion

Fish oil would be the best stuff for that. It will stick like shit to a blanket and is designed to protect from rust. You can get it in a pressure pack and just spray it on. It can easily be cleaned off.

Re: Axle Corrosion

Have checked mine also and found the same, not too bad a present but left alone could easily become an issue, might use some rust inhibitor then spray on a little of that Wurth HHS2000 spray grease, its a shame that the attention to detail is not there - I guess its the difference between Chrysler and some other Marks.

Re: Axle Corrosion

Man......that is some serious corrosion for a new car. Looks like they've used cheap Chinese black steel!!! Is this for real? Looks more like some 1970's old banger?

If this is on the level, clearly Chrysler has used cheaper parts on their cars to meet the market - shame on them! Clearly their most basic research would tell them that if they built a 4X4 that there would be a reasonably high expectation that their product would land on a beach a few times during its lifetime.

I could be way off but like any new model of anything, these cars were released in US in 2010, it seems like our fine US cousins may be Chysler's guinea pigs and hopefully changes were made 2011 onwards......but I doubt it.

Clearly those of us who have not yet hit the beaches will need to take some protective measures.

That's right, you took delivery and went for and immediate romp at Fraser! Man I think your wheels will struggle to come off!

If you get them off, it would be great if you posted a few images of what you find,......will give us an idea of what to expect!

Re: Axle Corrosion

I had originally thought that the corrosion might be due to galvanic action with the alloy wheel but on checking the galvanic table, it is the wheel that should be corroding preferentially. So I can only put it down to heat, moisture and salt. I don't think the quality of the steel is the issue but any kind of a coating even just an oil film would have been good.

Re: Axle Corrosion

I suspect either some or all of us will suffer from various amounts of rust in our cars.

Rust even under our seats.....How to: increase seat incline

I don't think a car manufacturer or its suppliers would be dumb enough to use cheap black steel in this day and age but all this corrosion is a bit of a worry.

Re: Axle Corrosion

That's really shocking, I'll be hitting mine with this sort of stuff:

http://www.rubbedin.com.au/Product/3...ly-Black-Paint.

I've used similar paint on extractors that looked rusty, it's thin and holds up well.

I was quite surprised that the rotors were standing up well to corrosion, guess that masks underneath!
