Re: Benn0's build up thread

Well I've started my battle of the rock rail installation.... Was going well until I went to fit the flag bolts. Had them in, then realised the nuts aren't threading on well. But now can't remove the flag bolts to run the bolts over them. Should have run the nuts over the bolt threads before I started! DOH!

Re: Benn0's build up thread

Yep, always run the nuts over every bolt before installation. A little time consuming, but you’re super happy you do it when you find a problem bolt.
This procedure still didn’t stop me from putting the wrong bolts into the wrong holes on one side when fitting my basic side steps. I basically fitted my side steps 2.5 times. Even with the screw up, probably less time and fun that the rock rails are.

Re: Benn0's build up thread

Yep, I ended up getting the bolts to thread on fine, but still took me 8 hours to do one side. Had to take it off twice, if you tighten the flag bolts first (which make it easier to stop the bolt from spinning) the flange nuts on the sill don't line up enough to thread onto the bolts. The bolts they give you are about 5mm too short. If you bolt in the seam stiffner first, the flange nuts on the outer sill don't line up again. So started with the flange nuts first, then the flag bolts, then the seam stiffner. Still a few bolts I just couldn't get to grab a thread because they just don't line up right.

Those flag bolts are just dumb!

Anyway, I'll do the 2nd one tomorrow and see how long it takes.

Re: Benn0's build up thread

Well, amazing how quick you can do it when you know what you are doing. 2.5 hours for the 2nd one. Sill flange nuts first, then the flag bolts, then use 2 car jacks to push it up to the weld seam and bolt in (needed a roofing screw for the rear one, just couldn't get the supplied bolt to grab, despite running them over before hand).

And still had problems with one of the flag bolts... they are silly things!

Re: Benn0's build up thread

The sliders blend in really good with the black trim around the wheel arches.
How are you finding the ST MAXX's, do you get much road noise from them? My ST's seem pretty loud compared to other AT's I've run.

Re: Benn0's build up thread

Cooper STs can be real loud from my experience... a 100 Standard I used to drive occasionally drove me insane with both high pitched whine and midband roar. However my old man had them on a 120 and they were quite acceptable. Seems to depend on the size of fitment to a huge degree...

... or something

Oh... and looking good Benn0.

Cheers,
Steve

Yep, they also give it more of a wider look around the skirts, the stock plastic skirting tapers in too much.

I'm happy with the ST Maxx, they do start to get noisy over 60kph, 80kph is probably the loudest, as they get up to 100kph, the noise is higher pitch and blends in with the wind noise. Don't notice it so much, and still quieter than the cruiser was. Over 100kph the steering becomes a bit unresponsive, might depend on the road surface, but really noticed it on the Bruce highway in the 110 zone, not so much on the 110 zone to the GoldCoast. They just don't respond to small corrections so well, have to feed in a bit more turn, then it over corrects. I'm putting it down to the luggy shoulders on these tyres, don't think its the car.

Still haven't had a chance to test them off road, hopefully over the school holidays I'll get up to duck creek rd, or Booloumba creek, or maybe Lockyer National Park....
