Re: Capless fuel filler and dust

A guy on another forum used the plastic cap from a large can of hornet spray. It covers the exposed part of the filler tube, snug down to the rubber collar at the base.

I'd post the pic but that forum doesn't allow hot linking and my own image hosting site is down.

It would do you no good. You cannot view the image as anything more than a small thumbnail unless you're signed in as a member. At that small size you really can't see it that well.

I saved the full size image to my computer and uploaded it to my garage so I can get a URL to post it here. Should have thought of that yesterday...

NOTE: Idea and photo credits to onebluemcm at dieseljeeps.com

Hope this helps.

Re: Capless fuel filler and dust

Thanks Bones, bog simple and looks very workable. If the spray can plastic cap seals on the rubber collar that will keep the whole neck clean, as well as allow the filler cavity to be hosed out without forcing water onto the neck seal.
Nice touch with the diesel stickers too.

LOL... yes, simple is always the best. He said it was a nice, snug fit.

The cap was from a spraycan of Spectracide wasp & hornet killer.

Re: Capless fuel filler and dust

You'd have to question the merit of a capless fuel nozzle; have we become that lazy that we can't be bothered removing a fuel cap - especially in the CRD, you refill every 1000km or so???? Maybe Jeep have employed an ex Airforce engineer and thought this would be a great idea to facilitate mid air (road) refuel whilst on a mission!!!

Re: Capless fuel filler and dust

Just found an item which replaces the cap to make it capless. Wondering if there is an option for the reverse? - Fuel Tank Cap Capless Adapter Stant 41004 | eBay

I agree. Personally I don't see any advantage to a capless filler, only problems.

Some guys with Diesel Ram trucks are using a Fernco plastic cap for 1.5 inch PVC pipe. They're getting it at Home Depot. They have to cut it down somewhat so the fuel door can close properly. I don't know if the Ram uses the same type of filler tube that Jeep uses. It looks a little different in some other pictures I've looked at. But if the outside diameter of the filler neck is the same it should work.

Here's a link to the cap on the Home Depot site...

Fernco 1-1/2 in. PVC DWV Flexible Cap-PQC-101 at The Home Depot

I may stop one night after work and check that out... it's only $2.90 USD.

EDIT: I don't know what the outside diameter of the diesel filler neck is on the WK2. I have the 3.6L V6 gas engine in mine and I just went out and measured the outside diameter of my filler neck. It's 2.44 inches so this cap would be too small for mine.

Re: Capless fuel filler and dust

I can confirm that the spraycan cap works very well.

I dug around and found a large spray can of wasp and hornet spray. Took the cap off and tried it on my Jeep. Fits perfectly and snug down to the tapered rubber seal around the bottom of the filler neck. It's not going anywhere. If it happens to work loose a little due to road vibration the fuel door will prevent it from coming off. The fuel door closes without any interference.

The inside diameter of the cap measures around 2.56 inches (65 mm). I even left the Good Housekeeping seal of approval on it... LOL.
