I have often wondered what my jeep would be like if engineering got everything they asked for, regardless of cost.

shouldn't be hard to figure out if a catch can is needed, just look at how the crankcase breathing is managed.

Re: CRD breathing mods

I know what you are saying, but I fitted catchcans to my racecars and would be VERY reluctant to fit this to my $80k car, I would expect Jeep to fix the problem, IF there is a problem.
I have seen no increase in oil in ours, but we only have 3,000km on the clock.

Re: CRD breathing mods

yup, agreed, SHOULD be possible to engineer a crankcase breather that just exhales gases and not the oil itself. certainly the shop manual for the 3.0L CRD mercedes says that is how the crankcase breather is SUPPOSED to work, but I think every owner has seen otherwise.

Re: CRD breathing mods

Why 30 years ago oil injected into the intake was so popular (http://www.moreyoil.co.nz/details.ph...0&productID=47) to lubricate the bottom of the heads the valve stems.
Now they have engineered it into the system we are taking it out.

Dont think its the same motor. My understanding is that the 3.0L motor in the WK2 is new from the ground up and has not filtered down to the other models as yet.

Re: CRD breathing mods

It is totally unrealistic to compare current CRDs with older ones. Older CRDs did not have the benefit of ultra low sulphur diesel (ULSD) nor low ash synthetic oils which are only now coming onto the market and still hard to find in many places. Both ULSD and the low ash synthetic oil are designed to eliminate the problems of earlier CRDs. Of course if one insists on using truck diesel and mineral oils, performance will drop.
