Re: CRD engine chip

Hmmm.. so there is no significant difference in acceleration... 0.2/0.3 second can be treated as measurement error...
I'm disappointed... but thanks for your time WK2Diesel

Re: CRD engine chip

I've just expected (mayby too naively...) a major improvement.
Especially looking at this:

Re: CRD engine chip

While the chip may yield a claimed +31% increase in power, this will not translate to a +31% improvement in speed.
Generally these devices will up the boost and fuel pressure, they are not very complicated and known as piggyback tuners. They intercept the signal and trick the factory ECU into thinking there is not enough boost or fuel pressure. Most factory tunes are very conservative, but these devices can cause problems as they are not set right.

Re: CRD engine chip

I was talking with my Subaru dealer/service owner the other day.
He said that he himself has tested this kind of a chip in the new Forester diesel and was suprised as it has noticably improved fuel economy and throttle response.
When I asked him if this could do any harm to the engine he said: definately no.
It just pushes engine capabilities a little bit further but keeps it in a safe range.
So now I'm confused...

Re: CRD engine chip

Factory ECU's are safe, but you abuse a stock motor it will still break, so will a modified one. The difference between the 2 are that a modified ECU will have less safeguards and could result in a breakage earlier. You have to look at the amount of R&D is put into a OEM ECU, it would be 100x more than an aftermarket product. They are also EU based and may not consider our harsher environment when doing their tuning.
While plugging this in will most likely no blow up your motor, it always can.
The old rule of modification is " You Play, You Pay"

Re: CRD engine chip

I always find these discussions interesting. It really reflects our "modern" society with "it may be illegal", "what if something happens", "warranty...", "insurance...". A few years down the track we will all be too scared to get out of bed in the morning

These chips are legal and you are much more likely to damage your vehicle by taking it out on the road into these hostile environment we call traffic!

But back to the topic...
I have a box from rachechip.de sitting on my desk and as soon as I find a few minutes it will be fitted to my GC. I had chipped my previous GC and it made a noticeable difference in power and absolutely no issues in the 4+ years I owned it.

Part of the fun owning a car is playing with the car and I intend to do exactly that

I will report back once I have fitted it.

Re: CRD engine chip

I know what you are saying, but I have been there and done it and seen the result.
I am a Mod on xr6 Turbo and see so many people get their cars "Edited". They then break the motor and then complain that Ford will not honour the warranty.
I am not saying they are a bad chip or that they are illegal, but I am saying that if you break it, then expect to pay to fix it. You are putting a lot of faith in a EU$129 box on your AU$55k+ car
I also know Jeep read these forums and will keep a list of people admitting to fitting them.
If I had one, I would never admit to it.

Re: CRD engine chip

As the external chip leaves no trace in the system (doesn't change an engine map etc.) Jeep can follow all the threads they want... If you unplug it before service there is no chance they will know about it. As simple as that...
It's a confirmed information. Also from Subaru service

Re: CRD engine chip

I would suggest you go tot he WRX forum and see how many people have had modified cars rejected for warranty claims.
Car makers cannot warrant modified cars.
Many people thought Ford could not detect an edited ECU, well they thought wrong, Ford send an engineer with a ECU tool that can detect a modification.
Piggy back ECU's are different, as they do not leave a trace, however it is a risk.
Just remember that IF you make a warranty claim on a blown motor/gearbox/diff, Jeep can say "denied" and then you have to fight them.
Mind you they can say it regardless of any modifications.

Do not think I am against anyone doing this, I am just making people aware of the possible results.
