Re: CRD oil on special

There are actually quite a few oils that meet ACEA C3, however in Aus, only Mobil 1 ESP meets MS-1110, (that I am aware of), if that is important to you. The jury is still out on whether that is actually mandatory if you have C3 and MB 229.51.

I guess we will never know.

37,000kms now, so not long to the 40,000 service and the GC is running beautifully as usual.
Havoline Fully Synthetic C3 5W-30 ticks all the boxes except Chrysler MS-11106. I'd be perfectly happy to use it if it was difficult to get Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30.

Re: CRD oil on special

Is there someone who can compile a list of Oils available to buy in Australia that would partly or completely satisfy the requirements set out by Chrysler/Fiat?

If this can be done maybe us blokes in OZ won't get ripped off by the stealer-ships that charge and arm and a leg for a minor service and if we service it via a proper mechanic with genuine/OEM parts then they can't deny any warranty work?

e.g. for CRD (don't grill me if I got some wrong - just reading up on Google) - * means I'm uncertain

Some of the oils you have listed are also approved to MB 229.51. My guess and it's only a guess, is that this is pretty close if not the same as MS-11106. Also you need to distinguish between oils that claim "meets or exceeds" rather than "approved to" a specification. The former is nothing more than wishful thinking by the manufacturer whereas the latter is a certification by the testing authority.

Re: CRD oil on special

i agree with your thoughts Bob, and the Mercedes BeVo list appears to back you up.
Here is an extract from the top of the page that lists oils "approved" to MB 229.51 (search BeVo for this page if you want the full list: MB 229.51 - Low SPAsh multigrade service engine oils (Specification 229.51) - Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids).
"We are recommending to use exclusively the products listed in the following overview, because only these products have been tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz.
We recommend
1. Using only products which are distinctly marked with the label indicating the approval of Mercedes-Benz, e.g. “MB-Approval 229.51”. Labels referring e.g. to “MB 229.51” don't have an approval of Mercedes-Benz.
2. Which are listed in the current MB BeVo. Only listed products are tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz."

For more interesting reading check out MB's oil specifications here: http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/d/d/en/Spec_221_0.pdf
and in particular the last page referencing 229.51.
I think it sets out a pretty compelling argument to use an oil that does comply in every respect - and including MS11106.
in my opinion those chasing cheap oils are missing out on oil performance and protection big time.
John

So is MS11106 the same as MB229.51? I think thats the real question in all of this, as many oils comply with 229.51, but far and few advertise MS11106.

A number of members posting on this and similar topics on this forum have done lots of research on exactly this question - hence the value in reading and comprehending the information they shared, in order to make informed purchase decisions.
As far as I am aware no one has documented that they are exacty the same - they are both in house specifications.
MB229.51 is very comprehensive and if it suits Mercedes late model high performance diesel engines fitted with DPF, then an owner of another brand with a similar engine could conclude the performance and protection will be there.
Key wording again is "approved", not "meets" or "complies" (or simply referencing MB229.51 as MB BeVo points out).

IMHO the MB229.51 is then irrelevant if there is no concrete evidence to suggest it is the same as MS11106.

For all the speculation, I'd know what Fiat/Chrysler would say if there is warranty work required and they find out the oil being used with the vehicle doesn't meet said standard.

BobT, I will see if I can collate that information regarding 'meeting and/or exceeding' or 'approved to'. Bare with me for a few days as I trawl through the world wide web.

Correct me if im wrong, but from memory doesn't the manual say something along the lines of "use MS11106 or MB229.51" ?
