I posted this elsewhere but thought I was in this thread, anyway here's some info i've come across for us "Aussies Diesel Fuelers"
700klm off my first service, I only have one dealer here and they have been using Total oil, but the service manager tells me they can't get it anymore (prob a price decision)

I've just located this Shell product: Shell Helix HX7 ECT 5W-30

$42.95 per 5lt @ Supercheap : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Shell-Hel...3D331041579821

Has Chrysler MS11106 rating

https://www.shell.com.au/products-se...-ect-5w30.html

What draws me to this is that being a major brand here in Aust, the availability nationwide should not be an issue.

Re: CRD oil on special

Appears to meet it, but is only semi synthetic rather than just synthetic like the manual calls for?

Good find!

It may not be fully synthetic but meeting MS11106 is a pretty good argument.

I tried to find out what Shell means by "synthetic technology oil". All I got was that it is a synthetic blend of some sort. However, in my searches I dug up this interesting page on oil myths https://www.shell.com/global/product...ips/myths.html

If you read the first few pages of this thread and the issues with Shell labelling of their product perhaps you may not be quite as enthusiastic.

Just a quick Google brings up the following info…
1. Shell Helix HX7 ECT 5W30 is not listed as a Mercedes Benz MB229.51 oil in their BeVo (their oil bible). An oil submitted for MS11106 must meet MB229.51.

2. The Shell specification linked to states the semi synthetic oil is MB229.31.

After my communication and conversations with Shell Technical Services in Melbourne there is no way I would trust their labelling.
You can still find Shell product data stating Shell Helix Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 has MS11106 - years after they changed their base oil formula which made it a totally different oil - still sold under the same product label. I just see that as shonky.

This subject has been researched in superfine detail by many experienced members on here and the only oil readily available here, that clearly meets the standard without any fudging or question is the Mobil ESP Formula 5W30 product.
Every 10,000k there isn't that much money saving surely - to use a product that may or may not provide the protection and performance that an oil savvy owner is looking for in their CRD.
My two bob's worth - again……
John

Re: CRD oil on special

I totally agree with you JOHN47.
However, whilst the majority of dealers in Oz seem to be using anything from treacle to sewing machine oil, totally disregarding the specification required, it would appear that owners doing their own oil change, selecting a product which vaguely resembles a engine oil are making a smarter decision.

Yep, and I agree it is not right…….
but my point is that an owner who cares to do the research and selects a product - that effort should result in the best possible result for the vehicle (thats why the effort in the first place).
Particularly given this context and DPF issues.

Shifty (OK maybe slick) product labelling doesn't help that cause.

And i know you are just poking but I can recall that new owner glow still. We all had it once.

Re: CRD oil on special

Attached is a little more data from Shell but as John warns, the data is dodgy. The table claims that Shell Helix HX7 ECT complies with MB229 but there is no such animal. MB lists this oil as approved to MB229.31 only.

It seems we need not be concerned about the term "synthetic technology oil". A quote from the site below states,
"In Europe, oil manufactured from chemically modified Group III base oil is called HC synthesis or synthetic technology oil and that from Group IV base oil is known as fully synthetic oil. In North America, all oil manufactured from Group III and Group IV base oil is called fully synthetic oil. In practical terms, there is little difference in the technical characteristics of synthetic oil manufactured from Group III and Group IV base oil stocks."

Sox,
I can't find Liqui Moly 5w20AA but the Liqui Moly site recommends Liqui Moly TOP TEC 4200 5W-30 for the 3L CRD. The problem with this oil is that it doesn't have Chrysler approval MS-11106. However it does have MB approval 229.51 which is not too bad. BTW, it is not a fully synthetic oil but a synthetic technology oil but that isn't really an issue.

Re: CRD oil on special

The only issue with MB229.51 approval is that it doesn't test for high temp deposits. Atleast with Mobil 1 ESP you have some confidence it meets the standard, but we don't know if others also do, or perhaps may have better results......
