Re: CRD oil on special

Sorry LaNcE10
If you are referencing Shell Helix 7 ECT 5W30 - as far as I can determine from Shell online information it is only a semi- synthetic oil, and shows MB229.31, and MS11106.
For an oil to be "approved" to MS11106 it must first be "approved" to MB229.51, and this requires a full synthetic oil.
I don't believe it is possible for an oil claiming MB229.31 to meet MS11106.
Shonky and misleading marketing in my opinion.

Putting cheap oil in the CRD may well result in DPF issues and carbon buildup relating to the EGR. Both potentially VERY expensive results.
I'm sticking with Mobil 1 ESP 5W30.
It has the necessary "approvals" and while not the cheapest oil around, I have confidence I'm putting best product in the engine.

hi john! thanks for that! I only used the Shell helix HX7 only because it was the one that the dealership put in the on my my14. the one I serviced last night with the HX7 from supercheap was the my12.

so you guys are saying that the HX7 is not compatible with our jeeps right? because if it is not Essendon jeep has something coming.

is there 2 HX7's??

Based on experiences related on this forum over the years it certainly isn't unusual for dealerships to use oils that don't comply. It's the "one size fits all approach".
For a bit more on this as it relates to Shell go back to the first page of this topic and then read down and particularly to post#11.
Then overlay that over the claim Shell now make against Helix HX7 ECT, particularly their point about MB229.51 being a prerequisite.
The first couple of pages of this thread shows how convoluted their marketing can be.
I won't bother with their product.

Re: CRD oil on special

The oil specs for our Jeeps have changed anyway. The 5W30 C3 is now out and replaced with 5W40 E7/E9.
FCA are recommending Shell Helix Ultra 5W40.
I am going to use Mobil Delvac ESP 5W40.

No, we are certainly not saying it is incompatible nor are we saying it will cause harm. We have no evidence that it will cause harm. What we are saying is that in view of Jeep's stated specification, this is not the best oil. If that doesn't matter to you and dollars count, that's OK. As far as John is concerned, if he is out in the middle of the Simpson Desert towing his caravan, he wants to mitigate the risk of the DPF spitting the dummy and flicking the car into limp home mode.

Re: CRD oil on special

We do get out in the shrubbery Bob, and the Simpson was an area we ventured many times, and quite a few years ago now......pre Jeep days.....although wouldn't be an issue to run ours across. Not with the van on the back but.
And your comments are spot on.

Re: CRD oil on special

You can take your pick……

"Mr Rushworth," said Lady Bertram, "if I were you, I would have a very pretty shrubbery. One likes to get out into a shrubbery in fine weather." —Jane Austen, Mansfield Park (1814).

That one wasnt for us however - on our quests we actually spent a lot of time looking for the right shrubbery...""one that looks nice. And not too expensive."

- became complicated, and herring were hard to find.

Probably the younger ones amongst us wouldn't understand.
