Re: CRD oil on special

I did read somewhere that Chrysler had recently swapped over to Mobil for their OEM oils. I can't remember where I read that, so may have just been a forum post.

I recall reading somewhere that Mopar oil is actually Mobil 1 so perhaps they have stopped their pretence.

Re: CRD oil on special

Having just taken delivery of my new Laredo CRD, I noticed that the manual now states a slightly different oil requirement than that which this thread has been discussing.

I quote " the manufacturer recommends SAE 5W-30 synthetic low ash oil that meets the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard MS-11106, and that are approved to Fiat 9.55535-S1 or Fiat 9.55535-
S3 and ACEA C3."

Does anyone know which oils meet these requirements??

Re: CRD oil on special

I think that maybe a hard combination to find. The pennzoil Ultra Euro L 5W-30 according to the Pennzoil website in the states seems to match. Maybe possible to get it here or import it.

Incidently, what does the manual say for oil capacity inc filter?

Swampy, the manual says the diesel's oil capacity including filter is 8.4 litres (9 quarts).

And that is exactly what it should be. The previous CRD manuals for the MY11&12 had 9.5litres. When I told Chrysler Jeep Australia that it was wrong, they said they would get there technical people to look into it. They still come back and said that no, 9.5 litres was correct, even though those of us that self perform our own servicing knew it was wrong.

At least they have it right now.

Well that's just wonderful, isn't it? I say that synically. Now we have just one oil we can use, if we can even get it here:
Pennzoil Ultra Euro L
If however we ignore the Fiat requirement we still have only 3 oils:
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30
Pennzoil Platinum European Ultra Diesel 5W-30
Pennzoil Ultra Euro L
Update: There is also:
Mopar SAE 5W-30 Q Diesel Plus (#68001334PA) [This is recommended for the 3L CRD but it doesn't say if it's for the Merc or VM. I'm trying to find out more.]

Re: CRD oil on special

Pennzoil was purchased by Shell in 2002.........it may be that the Pennzoil product is still using the "old" Shell formula.
I'm not sure I would trust it though as Shell still have published information on the web that shows the Helix Ultra Extra 5w-30 as complying even though I have written confirmation from them that they have changed the formula and it no longer complies.
Mobil 1 is the only oil I know carries the MS11106, and as far as I know they haven't messed with it.
That's what will go in ours when the last of the "old" Shell I have gets used in another 5,000K.

Re: CRD oil on special

Pennzoil is still marketed as Pennzoil in the USA and some of their formulations are a little different to ours.

I'm currently running the Mobil 1 ESP in our machine and it is running well and will continue to do so as it meets all the specs in our manual.

The problems with some of these oil specs is that some are probably the same or equivalent to other specs, but we will never know.

I suspect that Fiat 9.55535-S1 and Fiat 9.55535-S3 is probably the equivalent to MB229.31/229.51, but how will we know?

I think that as long as we meet ACEA 3, MS-11106 and either of Fiat 9.55535-S1, 9.55535-S3, MB229.31 or 229.51 all will be OK mechanically.

I would prefer to specifically meet all specs in the manual, dot the i's, cross the t's etc to eliminate wriggle room in regards to warranty, and for MY11s & 12s, we do if we use Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30. MY13s appears to be more of a challenge.

Re: CRD oil on special

Just picked up 10 lt of Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 from GL Lubricants in Regent Park. $13 per litre sold in 1 lt containers. I think they are grey importing from USA.

Re: CRD oil on special

The funny thing is that we are depending on a Jeep spec for a Fiat motor, and not really paying attention to the Fiat spec oil.

Correction: Some Mopar part numbers for oil are Mobil 1 and some are Pennzoil, according to Bobby of http://www.factorymoparparts.com/.
