However I have lost confidence in what they are doing. Plus in my humble opinion the Jeep actually runs better on the Mobil 1 ESP plus it doesn't seem to do the DPF burn offs as often either. Maybe because, from memory, the Mobil has 25% less Ash than the Shell.

Modern diesels require a very low ash
So the lower the better for your engine

Swampy, John47, All,

I 'researched'' www.shell.com.au last night and found many different references, webpages, Product Descriptions, Product Data Guides and Technical Data Sheets for Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30. As John47 and Swampy correctly (my bad in the earlier post, apologies) point out, some are in contradiction to each other.

Therefore, I sent the below 'Technical Enquiry' to Shell Australia via their Website Feedback facility. I am hopeful that this will prompt Shell into aligning all of the documents etc to the correct specification, irrespective of whether or not it meets MS-11106.

See what happens.

TECHNICAL ENQUIRY - Sent via shell website 1722 21/03/14
Hello,
My enquiry is in reference to the specifications of the Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 motor oil.
I would like to bring to your attention that the following documents and webpages available from Shell in Australia - Australia are in conflict.
Product Data Guide - Consumer [ http://s05.static-shell.com/content/...sumer-2013.pdf ], and
Product Data Guide - Complete [http://s04.static-shell.com/content/...plete-2013.pdf ] both claim that Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 motor oil exceeds the requirements of Chrysler MS-11106 standard.
The TDS for the same Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 motor oil product [ http://www.epc.shell.com/documentRet...ntId=102185340 ] does not make the same claim.
Please advise which is the correct specification and which industry and motor vehicle manufacturers standards it does meet and/or exceed.
I am sure you would not want me to use your product in my vehicle if it is not fit for purpose and it is for this reason that I seek your clarification.
I have read and understood the standard 'disclaimer' (Although Shell makes every effort to ensure that the information provided in this web site is correct, it does not guarantee the accuracy of such information. Shell accepts no liability for any loss or damage suffered as a result of using this product for any application other than specifically stated in the Product/Technical Data Sheet.) but I am sure you would want to make your website and other literature as accurate as possible.
Yours Sincerely,
Graham.

Hi Graham

Will be interesting to see what they come back with this time.

I haven't checked for a while, but what does the oil bottle in the shop say?

Swampy, All,

Back of container states:

BMW LL-04; MB Approved 229.51; VW 504.00 /507.00; Porsche C30.

That correlates with the TDS [ http://www.epc.shell.com/documentRet...ntId=102185340 ]

If you squint really hard you can read the same on the photo below. Photo taken today at Supercheap Auto.

Re: CRD oil on special

Good luck Graeme,
When I pushed Shell TS Melbourne on exactly this issue with similar emails back in 2012 they simply didn't answer me.
I was certainly using the right email address as they had answered my first couple, then I posted the extract from the last email I ever got when I asked them to put it in writing.
I think it all got too hard.
Go hard - I think it is arrogant of them.
John

Reply to above Technical Enquiry received from Shell Australia today.

"We no longer claim the Chrysler M-11106 specification on the Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30.
The up to date and correct TDS is the one on www.epc.shell.com which does not claim the Chrysler specifications.
We only recommend the Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 for out of warranty applications.
Our marketing team is working to update the on line data guide.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Re: CRD oil on special

Has anyone come across Nulon Oils? On the website it lists this oil (Full Synthetic 5W-30 Diesel Formula Long Life Engine Oil- Nulon Australia) for the MY14 JGC DTV6 engine.

Mentioned in post 21 - CRD oil on special

It doesn't meet the elusive MS-11106, so no good until out of warranty.

... however neither does the oil used by many dealer service departments.

Re: CRD oil on special

But they are doing the service, so they are liable. If you're doing your own oil change, then pay the extra and make sure you cover your ass for warranty by having MS-11106.
Outside of the warranty period, use sand if you want.

Re: CRD oil on special

I'm not sure that would stand up to scrutiny by consumer protection. The manufacturer's agents, by their actions, negate the requirement to abide by MS-11106. Also remember the car warranty remains with Jeep Australia, not the dealer.

Re: CRD oil on special

It would be up to JA to prove how an oil such as Helix or Nulon caused a failure.

Being that these oils have many accreditations, JA would have a very hard time proving it, as most quality low ash synthetic oil will be suitable.

It is very likely that the MS-11106 approval is very expensive to get tested or is only tested once a year in the highlands of Mongolia by a secret Buddhist Sect. This would discourage many oil suppliers to bother.

Car makers want you to use their products, so they make non OEM suppliers jump through crazy hoops to obtain their converted approvals, as they keep moving the goalposts and demand constant testing.

So while there is some risk that JA would deny a claim if the oil did not meet their specifications, I would love to see them go up against the ACCC and a big oil company to prove that their oil caused a failure. The trick is to ensure you meet the scheduled services and keep the receipts.
