disaster test drive might mean end of jeep aspirations

to some this might sound like i am having a dig at jeep but really i am just very disappointed as i had my sights set on a GC


last week i finally got around to taking a grand cherokee for a test drive. i have been reading, researching and saving my pennies for a new one for a little while now. i have sat in them and had a look at the showroom for quite some time so i am familiar with the different models. since i know the summit is here shortly i thought i might jump and take a test drive of an overlander as the summit would temp me (just me i relise not everyones cup of tea) to put the money down now as opposed to waiting until i had a few more dollars to spare.

but, things just didnt go well, i was supposed to be testing an overland but got a laredo w/standard suspension no extras, he had 20" wheels on it though so he said it was exactly the same, have to take his word for it, i would have liked to know for myself! i also wanted to test the sunroof version, one for headroom (since i am tall) but mainly just to see if it wind buffeted as much as the LC200 sahara i tested did or perhaps it might have been more like land/range rover since they have a device to cut wind buffeting, theirs looks stronger more robust though . obviously there are other things the overland has that would have been useful to test or get a feel of as well.

then after some minutes of driving , paused at an intersection, upon going to proceed the car just sat there, not budging, the guy is looking at me like there is something wrong with me, is kinda indicating i can go now, duh! i say hey, its not working, so we are looking at each other, and all over the the dash etc trying to figure out whats going on, i have tried a few things by this point and naturally have pressed and depressed the accelerator a few times as well...then what seemed like several minutes, without warning the car lunges forward like a wilder beast on heat, so we are off! at another intersection the guy is making small talk (embarrassed) and says ,oh well lets see if it does it again, we are both cautious and wary now, its a bit disconcerting to stall in traffic and then to take off at speed an unknown amount of time later

we keep driving and it did it again when i was in the middle of doing a U turn (would not be fun if towing), al beit it was short period this time, and this time it came up with a dash alert that the car needs to be returned to dealer for accelerator to be serviced or some such thing, also a red light now on the dash

then i had to practically hand feed and convince these sale men (one was the head boss of the place) that summits are coming to OZ in the next few weeks and i have to explain the differences to them..some hour or more later they finally get the information that i have been telling them and said that info has only just this minute come to light (hmm ok but i have known for at least a week or two before)

we talk about the DPFilter (was trying to get a price for unclogging one as i heard it is a LOT, he didnt tell me price in end) and he practically tells me not buy the diesel if you do city commuting or if i do then every 500k or so take for a 30 drive in the country at higher revs to burn it out (that method kinda cancels out economy benefits though hey), basically it was on me if the DPF clogs as it means i am not using it properly..just sounded like he was setting himself up so they don't get stung for it and charge me)...there were many other red flags thrown up, this conversation just wasnt going well..not to mention he actually said, which i thought was either kinda silly or extremely honest, i don't know which, but he said he would not compare to a Land Cruiser or a Land/Range Rover as they are proper/genuine off road vehicles, the Grand Cherokee isnt in the same class, his words not mine, the cherokee isnt as capable off road (outback oz)....i may be wrong but i thought the basic system was very similar if not identical to the land rover Disco or range rovers...perhaps it isnt because i called into the land rover dealer on the way home for a quick look and he said the same thing(thats could be expected, though he sounded genuine), GC not in the same class , more closer to their freelander or evoke which do ok on sand and such but not nearly as good as their other vehicles, softroader perhaps


anyway, long story i know...quite disappointing from our perspective, my daughter in particular was very keen on the GC (it looks), my sons say cant buy it, it broke down, its a peice of junk .

And your shift key appears to be broken ... Junk the computer.

While thousands of Jeeps are running fine, sometimes an omen is an omen. Better luck with your second choice.

Jeezuz, I don't think I would buy one after that either.
I also wouldn't buy any vehicle from that dealership with the amount of crap that came of their mouths.

are some colours more unlucky than others..

think it was white but it really wasnt something i was focusing on

Wooo! That was a tough read...one massive run on sentence without punctuation!

The DPFilter will clean out on a steady cruise where you are achieving greater economy than in town....but yes, you do need to have some steady highway operation periodically. 500k may be a bit often but every 1000k would be more like it. 50k of steady operation is enough. All diesels with DPF are this way. Thank the environmentalist for this!

sorry, if its hard to read, punctuation, writing and english is not my strong point but i am a bit too old to get any better, so live and let live...just take a rest at every (,) comer and a bigger one at the (.) full stops, and there are paragraphs to help...in the end to me it doesnt look any different to your punctuation.


there is of course something to what your saying about the DPF but in Oz we are not required to have them yet, toyotas dont have them and LR according to them the other day when asked, dont use them either here, although i thought they are euro V rated which to me makes me think they should have them. apparently there are different ways to meet euro 5 compliance without this DPF configeration that Jeep use, but i dont know enough to argue. simply that, some vehicles use them and some don't (yet)...

thing is though, the head manager said what i mentioned in my earlier post, he also said just to take it out, that its nothing but chalk (his words not mine). when i mentioned that the vehicles computer would notice it is not in place and thereby not run , he said ''of course it will, the computer only knows when its clogged, not when its missing''....by this point i didnt know when to believe him and when to dismiss his comments as mere sales BS , not to mention i doubt he/Jeep would back up the warrantee if the DPF was missing
