Does MDS save fuel?

Trying to work out if MDS does really save us fuel.
De-activating 4cyl the others still have to turn all that mass.
Does it cause faster wear on the working cylinders?

Been observing my scan tool. Instant fuel usage goes up over double when MDS cuts in.
I am thinking the scan tool only reads fuel from injector 1 the calculates it over the 8 injectors. take 4cyl out and the scan tool still thinks there is 8cyl.

Last week two trips to Mt Keith mine 910km return.
1st in normal driving mode 35c outside got 12.6l/100 1650rpm
2nd in tow haul mode same temps same load in car got 11.7 1950rpm
The old girl is loaded up full with a large tool box, fridge and second battery.
All takes up the back seats.

Now is the tow haul mode more efficient because of the MDS disabled, or because it is not in top gear? is the higher RPM getting it in its torque curve were it is happy?
