Ok, so we driving along towing our caravan and the engine makes a rattle and stops. The dealer checks out the electronics, no codes, they turn the engine by hand and after about half a turn they hear a rattle. A week later they still don't know what the problem is as Chrysler Australia won't let them tear the motor down. I know enough about engines to know it,s a mechanical issue. It's a 2014 3.0 CRD. Any ideas?
Wow Peter... talk about being hamstrung. How many kays are on the clock? Does it still start, or even crank over???
I can't imagine how Head Office expect the problem to be progressed from outside the motor when the little man with the hammer is busy running amok inside! I hope there's some sense soon.
Peter,
Sorry you've had this setback in your plans and hope your disappointment is short lived.
From your description of the rattle noise when the engine was turned over by hand, I suspect the internals experienced a connecting rod bearing failure due to lubrication breakdown.
Unfortunately, these failures have been occurring all to frequently with the 3L diesels but typically have been within the mfg warranty period. The reason for Chrysler not wanting your dealer to tear down the engine, is probably because they first want an oil analysis in order to verify what they already know. In any event, you should expect an engine replacement to be forth coming.
Hope the entire process is handled courteously and expeditiously. Please keep the forum updated as this plays out.
Update: The dealer has told me that Chrysler Aust. have said to put a new motor in, they expect that it be 2 to 3 weeks before we get it back. They have told the dealer don,t even bother tearing the motor down, so I guess they already know the problem.
I'm interested in whether the bottom end broke, or the cam gear rotated. Peter any chance you could try to suss out the dealer? I doubt it would be hard to identify which one.
Hi Peter, sorry to hear of your bad luck. I'm pleased that you appear to be getting a quick result (by FCA stds), it wouldn't have happened like this 12-18 months ago.
Were you miles from home when it happened?
My White Laredo goes in for it's 40K service on Monday and it make me a little nervous as now I'm retired I'm gearing up to go traveling.
Like the others have said, any info you can glean out of the dealer would be appreciated.
Best wishes for a speedy (well you'll be running it in) return to the road.
Hi all, it seems the conrod broke (shattered). FCA still haven't confirmed it will be repaired under warranty or when it will be repaired. We are currently stuck in a caravan park waiting for some idea when we will get our tow vehicle back.
FCA should have a good think about how this very public exposure affects their reputation. I'm sure the Jeep jokes are in high rotation at the caravan park happy hour...
So Peter, you are now two weeks into the dealer's original estimate of time to repair. Have you personally been in contact with FCA, or is this latest update just what the dealer is telling you now? This position would be a totally opposite direction to what your previous update indicated. Possible your dealer contact may just be speculating, not really having a schedule update to give you.
I have just had a call from Matthew at Valley Jeep, FCA have confirmed to engine failure will be covered under warranty. A great relief. We just have to wait 2 to 3 weeks for the new engine to arrive.
Our van is a Cell Homestead at 28ft, Tare weight is 2800kg, we were at about 3300kg when the engine failed, so within the weight limits of the Jeep.
Valley Jeep in Morwell have been great. It would seem that the dealers are let down by FCA.
