External Spare Wheel Carrier

The area under the back seems to be designed to accommodate a long range tank or a second spare wheel. Does anyone know if an external spare wheel carrier is available for the WK2?

I did find one on a USA website that used the tow bar hitch to mount off. Something like a bike carrier that held a spare tyre. Looked ok, albeit a bit bulky, and also good as long as you didn't want to tow anything.
I guess if you wanted to tow something, you could mount your spare tyre somewhere on the trailer or van etc.
Have tried to find it, but it must be on my computer at home. Will have a look on the weekend if someone else doesn't post it.

Re: External Spare Wheel Carrier

There is a US thread about this where I believe the wheel is marginally too big to fit in the cavity when the towbar is added. The suggested solution was to mount it off the horizontal I guess similar to the lancruisers. I'd prefer scarps' solution to getting the spare out of the back rather than putting it underneath.

Probably this -

http://www.tiregate.com/hg_series_0.shtml

Plugs into your towbar, but is a passthrough - you can still use the hitch, just less weight as you would need to include the weight already on the bar with this included.

These guys were looking to import them, but heard nothing from them in months.

Re: External Spare Wheel Carrier

These things are a great idea! I think I'll look into it in future.

My only concern is how they would impact departure angle. Otherwise it is a great concept.

Re: External Spare Wheel Carrier

I agree, either trailer mount it or stow it on your roof.

Re: External Spare Wheel Carrier

I just received an email from Avenger4x4.

The RRP for the Hitchgate in Aus is $1295. Number plate relocation kit is $100, and Gerry can rack to hold 2 gerry's is $395. You would also need to think about tail lights and indicators, as I think it would block the left hand tail lights.

Sounds expensive, but then again a Kaymar bar for a current Prado starts at $2300 fitted before you add the carriers. At least the hitchgate is removable.

Powerful4x4 in Lansvale sell these.
