First trip-how did our crd go

We took our jeep for a 4day camping trip in dargo and back to Melbourne via Mt Hotham and Mansfield. We drove crooked river track and took the dirt road to Omeo via Dogs Grave.

Travelled 1056ks and averaged 9.5 liters per 100 inc the offroad and highway driving at good average speeds.

Car was great, smooth, quiet, no one was carsick in spite of all the corners. River crossings were fine with the deepest around bumper height and very quiet on the gravel.

Not so good, our 50 litre fridge plus camping gear is a tight fit and hard to open fridge lid upright unless it is centrally positioned so I think a roof rack will be needed for longer planned trips. The fridge combined with a 75 amp thumper worked brilliantly and was so easy to wire up I did it myself! Mobile aerial helped improve reception but not as much as I thought it would.

Suggestions re roof rack welcome, some good ones in the us but been quoted over $1000 freight for Rocky rail brand.

I've ordered the Mopar roof racks and Thule basket as part of my pack. On my last Jeep, I bought aftermarket one's, but wanted it all included this time.

Not sure if this helps, but with the fridge, once mine arrives, I'm looking to build a flat mount and fridge slide on or over the rear passenger seat, and install a second battery under the passenger seat to hook into.

Rockrails and skid plates installed 2nd Sept. Long Range Fuel tank fitted 9th Sept. Bullbar, lift kit & new tyres? Who knows......

if you are into real heavy duty racks check this one out, probably as expensive though.

New Garvin Roof Rack

I have the Thule feet, with wing bars and a rhino basket which works pretty well. They are easy to remove when not being used.

Our 1st off road trip was to Moreton Island, apart from the few breakdowns mentioned in another thread i was very happy with how the vehicle performed.

Could definitely do with more front ground clearance, but in the soft sand the 4WD system worked very well before it decided to cut out. Fuel economy was also good keeping around 9.5L/100km.

the front clearance is made worse by the mudflaps and I expect they won't last long offroad so may pay to remove them before any rockhopping. Still the on road handling is tops so that's the price we pay. With the roof rack leaning towards thule roof bars with a rhino alloy rack. That should take care of the tent and chairs etc freeing up some interior space for beer and wine!

Fridge slide is in, needed to reinforce floor locating tabs and secure spare wheel well cover to take load when fridge slide extended . Be aware the cargo hooks at the tailgate are held in by screws into plastic. The ones near the rear seat are bolted into metal. Don't secure your fridge to the tailgate ones!!!!! An m5 bolt screws into the secured nut under the floor on the rear seat cargo hooks.
