Re: Full size spare

John, one problem with the Jeep and the KK is the Jeep's bolt pattern. Kimberley are set up for the LandCruiser 200 (among others) which has a 5 x 5.5" bolt pattern whereas the Jeep has 5 x 127mm(5"). For $250 extra they will machine up a pair of 10" drums for the Jeep however they can't offer me their "you beaut" electric over hydraulic disc brakes with Fox Racing shocks. They also try to match the tug's track. The LC 200 has a track almost identical to that of the Jeep. Its wheel offset is +70mm as against the Jeep's +56.4mm so using the trailer suspension for LC 200s gives a track only a few mm different from that of the Jeep, so immaterial.

Bob, a bit late, but you are correct it should have been 265/60 R18

I've placed an order with Factory Mopar Parts (FMP) for 4 wheels (3 for the trailer and one for the tug spare, 4 TPMSs, 10 wheel nuts and 2 centre caps). FMP often get their freight rates wrong or cancel orders that are too large so I'm not confident of getting the price shown till the order ships. The local dealership price for a wheel (part #1HX65AAAAB) is $642AUD , the FMP price is $169.65USD. The FMP site calculated the international shipping cost at $199. I think they have it too low but if it is correct, I'll be getting the whole order for about half the price of two wheels locally. The JustForJeeps price per wheel is $251.10 with a much higher shipping charge but still the total comes to 70% of the local price. That will be my fall back. The tyres I'll be supplying are Bridgestone D697s to match those now on the Jeep. Being LT tyres, they are narrower in the side walls and fit perfectly in the spare wheel well. A full size passenger tyre leaves the cargo lid slightly up that's why Chrysler chose to supply us with a 245 rather than a 265 spare. So I'm aiming at having a setup of six wheels with two spares (one on the tug, one on the trailer) all full size and interchanfeable.
As predicted FMP got their shipping price wrong but Bobby at FMP is very helpful at fixing things. He (Bobby is the male spelling, right?) sends an advice and if accepted, sends a PayPal invoice for the difference. The total cost of the order delivered to my door comes to $1,729AUD. This is less than the cost of just 3 wheels only for pick up at Suttons Waitara. Shipping is by USPS which takes about 2 weeks. Let's see how well the wheels are packed.

Re: Full size spare

I have just spoken with a wheel supplier in Melb and he tells me that they have a steel off road type rim to suit the Grand Cherokee, they are only a 17 x 8 but he has offered me one to trial fit so I will check clearences and offset. I have tried the 17's of the wife's Wrangler and their was only a slight interference with the front caliper that I think was more of a wheel design issue. If they work I will run a 265/70/17 I will keep you updated.

Cheers

Re: Full size spare

I'm guessing the 17 will fit the 3.6 as the base Laredo in the states are sold on 17's. I don't know if they would fit the CRD because I think the brake calipers are upgraded for the diesels for the increased towing capacity.

As far as I'm aware, all WK2's in Australia have the HD brakes - mine does and it's a 3.6L.

It's on the build sheet anyway!

It would've been good for 17's to fit! - plenty of spare wheels/tyres available!

I'm chasing a 18" spare alloy - jeez these things are expensive and hard to come by! I can get a set of 20" cheap - just not too sure whether I should change over as we're planning a trip to the Cape in June!

Option A - change existing 18"tyres to BFG AT's inc. spare steel and take a chance only taking one spare
Option B - as above but pay $$$ for a spare alloy and have that fitted with same tyre
Option C - change to 20" and fit with Cooper Zeon LTZ, and use 2 x 18" as spares?!

Why is everything never so simple.....?!

Re: Full size spare

It's only going to get worse as car companies get better at space savings...

My Alfa hasn't got a spare at all - just a can of goo.

My previous work cars were SV6 Commodores (3 over the past 10 years) and I always made sure I ordered them with a full size spare - I do a lot of country k's and didn't want to get stuck in the bush with a space saver.

But I just didn't check the Jeep before I ordered it - I guess I just assumed that a 4x4 would come with a full size spare. So I got caught out.

I have started putting together a list of "things I want", so I don't forget to check things next time. Once bitten...

Re: Full size spare

Following on from my previous post, the 4 OEM alloy wheels arrived at my door 24 days after order. Factory Mopar Parts in Tampa Fl, had to get them in from California. They them went by UPS from Tampa to Orlando FL to Louisville KY, to Honolulu to Sydney. Well travelled already. I had them all fitted with Bridgestone D679 265/60R18 LT. The money I saved by importing from the States payed for two of the tyres. One I kept to be my new car spare, the other 3, plus 10 wheel nuts and 2 Jeep centre caps, I delivered to Kimberley Kampers in Ballina to fit to the trailer I ordered. That should give me a car/trailer combo with 6 interchangeable running wheels with two spares. KK have ordered the hubs which have to be custom made to suit the Jeep's 127mm PCD bolt pattern. With the Jeep wheels and trailing arms they use for LandCruiser 200 trailers, I should get a track within millimetres of that of the Jeep. It is a great advantage to have the track of the trailer match that of the tug particularly in sand.
