Re: Full size spare

All the research paid off Bob....I can confidently predict after all your effort and outlay that the spare in the Jeep and the one on the KK will still have their pimples on when you wave goodbye as you trade up many years down the track.
I'll be interested to see the pics of the package out in the shrubbery.

Our Jeep and van are off down the coast of NSW on Monday, the long way round to Ballarat, then up the Murray to Berri, across to Broken Hill then Tibooburra and back home along the Qld border. That'll see 30k clocked up in the 12 months of ownership. Simpson Desert is on the calendar for June.

I'm hoping to be diligent enough to do a 5 wheel rotation on the Jeep and a 3 wheel rotation on the trailer... so no pimples. Or I could get a text book on queuing theory and work out how to do an 8 wheel rotation on the lot .

I hope you have a great trip. I know you will. We are thinking of something similar. The missus wants to take in the Clare Valley and McLaren Vale for obvious reasons then I'd like to take her to Mutawintji and on to the corner country like you. You are game taking on the Simpson. I don't think I'm up to that sort of thing just yet.

Re: Full size spare

We've done the Simpson ummmmm 8 times over the years in previous Patrols. Plus lots of other great places off the beaten track.
This new truck is supposed to be a "proper" 4wd so it has no choice.
We do enjoy it out there....

If you can do it 8 times, I can do it at least once. Watch out, here I come!

Hi Bob, Long time since this post of yours I know, but; Did you get to put the D697 on an alloy for use as the spare, and did it still fit in the spare wheel well? I think the OEM steel spare would be 7" or 7.5", vs 8" for the alloy, which may change the width of the tyre.
Thanks,
Russell

D697 in the 265/69R18 size is an LT tyre. Not all D697's are LT. LT tyres are squarer and don't bulge as much as passenger tyres so on the alloy rims, it fits better in the spare wheel well than the OEM Kumhos which donít fit at all. Actually, with the D697 on the alloys, the cargo lid sits about 1cm proud but with the two plastic cubbies removed from the spare wheel well, it fits almost flush.

Re: Full size spare

Can anyone shed any light on this? I found it on a jeep.com page ( http://www.jeep.com/en/2013/grand_ch...d_performance/ ). Note that is for my2013, and USA, but the implication is that the spare can be put underneath the car if it has QDII. I found it while searching for specs on ORAII, but this looks more connected to QDII.

"A rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential in Quadra-Drive II teams up with the NV245 active transfer case and its electronically-controlled clutch pack for awesome traction management.
You'll also find a skid plate group, telescoping rear driveshaft that adjusts for small changes during normal suspension travel and a gas tank that allows the tire to be mounted under the vehicle for added versatility."

Being able to carry a second spare without a roof rack or a carrier would certainly be a bonus.
Thanks,
Russell

That's news to me, as is the telescoping driveshaft. I'll check it out.

Edit: I checked it out. The gas tanks are forward of the rear axle leaving a large cavity between the rear axle and the bumper under the spare wheel well. It certainly looks as if this was intended to house a second spare. However, I suspect that in the final design the idea was abandoned. It could still be done but not without fair bit of rework including moving the tow-bar further rearwards and rerouting the tow-bar wiring. One would also loose some ground clearance unless the spare wheel well was raised. I would forget the idea. The space could be used to house an air compressor or Li-ion auxillary batteries. I understand that the US version of the diesel Grands will have the urea tanks located in this cavity.

Regarding the telescoping drive shaft, that is quite possible. Part of the drive shaft is unusually bulky but hidden under a heat shield. This could well be the telescoping mechanism or maybe vibration damping.
