Full size spare

Has anyone tried a full size A/T spare in the spare wheel well? How does it fit? I have the Kumho 265/60R18s all round. Incidentally, while the build sheet says full size spare, the spare is actually a 245/60R18 on a steel wheel.

Correction: The size of the spare should read 245/65R18, not 245/60R18.

Bob, CJD changed my Kuhmos to Cooper A/T3 FOC as mine is 2011 model and the Brochure specified A/T. The Kuhmos were dangerous in the wet, all tyres including spare are 265 it just fits

Bob,

I've got Cooper AT3 265/65/18 amd they fit fine. Strangely enough my stock 20" with the lhumos are too wide for the cover to close properly.

Thanks for that but can you please check the size for me. You might have a typo there. According to the Cooper table, it should be either a 265/60R18 or a 275/65R18.

I've now fitted five Bridgestone D687 265/60R18 LTs and they fit perfectly. I had the same experience as you in that the OEM Kumho 265/60R18s while considerably lighter were slightly too wide to close the cargo floor. I think the reason is that LT tyres have stronger side-walls which don't bulge as much. This gives double barrelled protection. Firstly the side-walls are stronger and secondly by not bulging out, they minimise spiking.

Bob

Did you keep the steel wheel as the spare or get another alloy?

For now, I have the D697 mounted on the steel wheel but I intend to get a matching alloy wheel plus tyre pressure sensor shortly so that I can do a five wheel rotation.

Re: Full size spare

Bob I know that you are investigating fitting matching wheels to your CT (or should that be Off Road Van??).......
as you probably know there are a few of us around that would be interested in a spare set of wheels with suitably tough tyres for various excursions (i still have 5 x 16" Patrol wheels fitted with BFG's in the garage), and if you can source suitable supply a heads up would be appreciated.

John
I just placed an order for a Kimberley camper trailer. They are flexible with wheels and tyres and try to match the tug. The upshot is that I will be supplying the wheels and tyres. I've placed an order with Factory Mopar Parts (FMP) for 4 wheels (3 for the trailer and one for the tug spare, 4 TPMSs, 10 wheel nuts and 2 centre caps). FMP often get their freight rates wrong or cancel orders that are too large so I'm not confident of getting the price shown till the order ships. The local dealership price for a wheel (part #1HX65AAAAB) is $642AUD , the FMP price is $169.65USD. The FMP site calculated the international shipping cost at $199. I think they have it too low but if it is correct, I'll be getting the whole order for about half the price of two wheels locally. The JustForJeeps price per wheel is $251.10 with a much higher shipping charge but still the total comes to 70% of the local price. That will be my fall back. The tyres I'll be supplying are Bridgestone D697s to match those now on the Jeep. Being LT tyres, they are narrower in the side walls and fit perfectly in the spare wheel well. A full size passenger tyre leaves the cargo lid slightly up that's why Chrysler chose to supply us with a 245 rather than a 265 spare. So I'm aiming at having a setup of six wheels with two spares (one on the tug, one on the trailer) all full size and interchanfeable.

John, Kimberley's standard wheels are not unlike your trailer wheels, BFGs with steel 6 stud wheels. With that comes a puncture guarantee. The guarantee applies only for LT tyres on steel wheels so I miss out on the guarantee. As they pointed out, a weakness of alloys is that a hard sharp rock such as a piece of quartz could conceivably wedge itself between the disk, the rim and the calliper eventually causing a puncture through the rim and destrying the rim. That would be interesting... not!

Re: Full size spare

Thanks Bob, much appreciated for the info....
my old swap wheels are Aust made ROH in the old Sunraysia pattern - they've seen 4 Patrols go past and probably 6 sets of tyres, all BFG - muddies and the last few sets AT's. They've done a lot of work and a couple have had a hammer taken to the rim edge after driver error but all look very reasonable still.
I still have an idea of a spare set of wheels for the Jeep but the caravan runs the 16" 6 stud Nissan pattern, I don't have the same swapability anymore, and we aren't doing the HD off road trips we used to - I'll just run the Geolandars for the interim and keep my eyes and ears open.
Your prices look excellent - you'll be dragging the flashest KK ever seen in Birdsville!
