Re: GPS points of interest

Got a phonecall from Fiat Chrysler today from a chap saying he was following up on the case number I lodged several months ago. He stated the girl who logged the case number has now left and he is taking over her cases.
Again he stated that he had never heard of the routing issue, which incidentally never ceases to amaze me.
Again I outlined the issue and he has requested I take the car to a dealer to have the details of the radio recorded in order that they can escalate the matter.
Sounds like smoke and mirrors to me, that they are going through the steps of pretending to act, when I very much doubt they will, or can do anything.
I again told him what I believed the issues to be, i.e. the system will not route via unrecertified roads, and it was a global issue, which was not due to the maps, nor the hardware, but was due to Chryslers routing methods in their software.
In any event, I will play their game and take to the dealers tomorrow.

Re: GPS points of interest

Who is your Fiat Chrysler contact? Was it Brad?

Also ask him if he would like a list of case numbers of people that have been effected? We can all PM you the case numbers.

It will be against Chrysler Jeep. The dealer here has been trying to get answers, but is also getting no support. I will pm you shortly.

Re: GPS points of interest

Returned to the dealer this moring to get an estimate of how long they will require the car to do the 10,000 klm service + fix my list of issues. These issues consist of
* DRL Reflectors. Mine are now about 1/4 of the reflector hazed. They told me that they saw no issues.
* Sand Issue. They said it did not effect my vehicle. I have the 3.45 diff. They simply said they plugged the scan tool in, and it reported no TSB's outstanding.
* Mudguard sprung over headlight lens. First of all they could see no issues. When I pointed them to the differences between the panels on both sides, they pushed the panel back in place. I hate to think how they did it, but suspect brute force.
* Navigation routing. They pointed out there was a fix coming, and they had not yet received the latest TSB Disk. When I pointed out to them that I already had that software upgrade 2.136, which could be verified if they bothered looking at the display, they simply repeated that the software was outdated.
* Dirt in the paintwork on tailgate. They claimed not to be able to see it. However, I had to point it out to them, when the response was "Öhh Yesssss". Then they scratched their heads as if to say "well, what do you want us to do about it?"

The dealership, Heartland at Castle Hill, certainly did not inspire any confidence in their ability to service my car. Took the Service Check-in guy about 15mins to record the VIN and asked me several times what the rego was.

The outcome was that they will check with HQ on what to do with the paintwaork, and as far as they are concerned the issues with Navigation routing, Sand, and DRL's were not issues.

Re: GPS points of interest

I'm dealing with Brad on the Navigation Routing issues. My car goes in on Monday to have the front recovery hook installed (finally) and to have Brad instruct the dealership to provide details of the Navigation system as supposedly there are updates available but for specific systems only!!!

Re: GPS points of interest

Studgun,

There apparently is a clip on the guard which pops out of the socket, and the guard springs away from the inner chassis. It is not an uncommon problem, and has been reported several times on the forums.
Take a look at the fender around the headlights. They should be neatly packed away below the headlight cover. When the clip comes undone, the fender moves away and laps over the lens. I hope I have explained it enough.

You mean the bumper coming unclipped below the headlight, or where it meets the fender? Mine won't clip in below the headlights so I need to get that fixed with the first service.

It was Rob who called me. Today, I called them back and spoke to Shaun. He seemed to think it was a hardware issue, although I tried to tell him that it was not. He then said it probably was a Navteq issue. I (again) explained the basics of Sat navigation how a satellite provides a co-ordinate, and that co-ordinate is overlayed onto a Navteq map. If a road exists at that co-ordinate, then an image is displayed showing where the sat has located you. It has nothing to do with routing. Routing is where the system knows where you are, knows where you want to go to, then by using the roads outlined, calculates the fastest or shortest way to get there.
The problem with the Jeep system, is that although the roads are displayed in Navteq, the system will not recognise anything smaller than a major hwy, regardless if a minor hwy is a mere 10mtrs away and that minor hwy is both the shortest and fastest method of getting to the destination.
I still get the impression they want me to return to a dealership who apparently will scratch their heads and tell me my software is out of date, but not to worry, because a magical fix is merely weeks away, and until they get the disk, there is nothing that can be done.
I do agree with the last comment, about nothing can be done until they get a software fix, but the point is I don't think Chrysler are planning to do anything about this issue, and there is no fix in the pipeline.

Hi Allypally

The issue is not so much whether a road is major or minor, but rather whether the road is "verified" or "unverified" on the Navtech maps, and that the Jeep system will not navigate on an unverified road if it has a choice of a verified road, regardless of whether the verified route route adds hundreds of Kms to your journey.

Even if you add a route "on the fly" while driving on an unverified road, it will get you to do U-turns etc to get you off as quick as possible.

The issue is essentially 2-fold.

1) The Navtech maps have many unverified roads (particularly here in the West, even major roads that have been there circa 30 years)

and 2) The Jeep system will not navigate on unverified roads if it has a choice. (There is no option to allow this in the settings like there are on other incar navigation systems).

Irrespective of both issues, it is Chrysler Jeeps problem to fix.

Re: GPS points of interest

Swampy,

I agree with you. The point I was trying to make is outside of the major cities, anything other than the main Hwy's seem to be unverified. It is odd though, that if you are actually on an unverified road, it will recognise the location and route you to a verified rd. Just don't try going from an unverified rd to another unverified rd.
