Re: Grand Cherokee in the media

Some one (handle of Charlie) has posted a very good and detailed response in the comments section of this motoring.com.au report on the issue.

Fiat Chrysler slammed by US government - motoring.com.au

Edited: Ooops, same article as what GMWK2 has posted. Sorry about that...

I had to quote it for prosperity:

Quote:
Charlie Croker:
Apologies for the long post, and wasted on the Twitter generation, I know, but allow me to add some facts to this story for context and to remove a little of the sensationalism.
- The Jeep models referred to in the NHTSA announcement are the 2002-2007 Liberty (known as a KJ in Jeep-speak and sold as Cherokee in Australia at that time), and the 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee (known as ZJ). The fuel tank issue with these vehicles has been known for a long time and this
announcement is, hopefully, the final judgement on the matter.
- The ZJ model pre-dates Mercedes ownership of Jeep which started in 1998, the subsequent private equity buyout in 2007, the US Government bailout of 2009 and Fiat’s more-recent buyout/takeover completed in 2014. Those earlier owners all had opportunities to resolve the issue so care should be
take not to apportion too much blame to the current FCA management who seem to have made great strides in taking a brand that was effectively moribund and transformed it with some pretty good and commercially successful product.
- Attempting to link that ZJ issue with the recall history of the current WK2 Grand Cherokee (three whole generations and a couple of decades later, by the way) is an awfully long bow to draw. Writers highlight these recalls as a negative yet we now know the NHTSA has been breathing down FCA’s neck. So is it any wonder the company has moved to a policy of recalls early and often, no matter how trivial the problem? And isn’t that a positive outcome for consumers to have a manufacturer attentive to such issues?
- Of the eleven recalls announced for the WK2, almost all relate to a production sub-set whether by date, model year or engine type, and some of those sub-sets are pretty small. For example, the first recall was for machining debris in V6 petrol engine blocks that affected around 500 vehicles in 2011, while two more recalls in 2013 related to output intensity of the DRLs and parking lights affecting a few hundred and a few thousand Jeeps respectively. Another recall was to check sun visor wiring that may have been damaged in any previous repair (so not a manufacturing fault), while the latest recall for incorrectly heat treated rear lower suspension arms concerns just one week’s production in June this year!
- The much-quoted brake booster issue was reported on a few hundred vehicles predominantly from the ‘Salt Belt’ in North America. An uncoated crimp joint had corroded over time allowing water to enter and freeze in the severe winter conditions affecting booster performance. Just one accident without injuries was attributed to this fault. Despite this localised issue, Jeep recalled all WK2s worldwide, even those sold and used exclusively in dry climates like the Middle East and Australia.
Yes, the ‘headline’ says there have been eleven recalls on the WK2 Grand Cherokee. But if you take the time to look at the details behind the headline, and consider the context of each recall, it starts to look like a manufacturer trying to improve on its deservedly poor past reputation. Fair go anyone?

Re: Grand Cherokee in the media

Unless he has some sort of proof of these conversations ie: email/text/some sort of documentation that supports it, I don't think a 'he said I could' would hold weight would it?

That conversation may cover the giving out of Jeeps to high flyers which generated publicity, but would hardly cover his personal spending.

It is a beautiful thing to see these guys squirm. No different to a 5 year old kid defence for taking an extra chocolate biscuit "he told me to do it". Good grief. Completely devoid of personal ethics.

These are car salesmen. Ethics never entered into it.
That is probably even more so for car thieves.

Re: Grand Cherokee in the media

The SRT is $90k in Australia. The blackhawk is the australian version of the altitude. Has been pretty popular here.
