Re: Grand Cherokee in the media

Hmmm.

Where is this going to lead?

Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin's car may have had a gear defect

There is a thread about this on the main WK2 bit of the forum - but thought I'd post the local news report here for the Oz members.

They will install a siren that flashes bright lights and a loud squelching sound if you open the drivers door and the car isn't in P. Roadside assist will automatically be alerted and turn up to give you a firm spanking.....

Re: Grand Cherokee in the media

Yep, what else can they do? Maybe enforce a training course on new owners before they leave the show room and make them pass a test before they get the keys, perhaps?

As for this poor lad's unfortunate demise, before we go blaming the gear shift design perhaps we should wait for the toxicology report...

Re: Grand Cherokee in the media

It seems to me that the park brake should have held it, and if not, atleast slowed it's slide backwards enough that he could get out of the way.

Relying on the transmission to hold the car is pretty dumb, there was some discussion about jeeps rolling away in the past even when in park, when on slippery surfaces, because if one wheel can be spun (because it is on ice or some other low traction surface), the other wheels will be allowed to move and the car will move. You need the park brake to prevent that from happening.

Very odd that he got to the back of the car before it moved on him.
Murder perhaps???

Maybe he was standing at the pedestrian gate and it slowly rolled back and he had nowhere to go.

Either way, pretty tragic. Feel for his family.

That was the thread, and my suggestion that the park brake should be always used was considered insane by the Muricans, who all seemed to consider it an emergency brake. Not sure what emergency they are waiting for.

Maybe it's one of the amendments to their Constitution, perhaps?

The retarded concept of the parking brake being foot operated probably lends to that myth.

How I so miss the Captiva's electrically operated parking brake. (and it's driver's footrest)...

Re: Grand Cherokee in the media

He may have thought he could rely on HSA holding the Jeep in place. It releases after a few seconds of the brake pedal being released. That will may end up being the culprit.

I thought that too, but someone else pointed out that it doesn't activate in Neutral.....

Re: Grand Cherokee in the media

HSA Activation Criteria

The following criteria must be met in order for HSA to activate:

Vehicle must be stopped.
Vehicle must be on a 6% (approximate) grade or greater hill.
Gear selection matches vehicle uphill direction (i.e., vehicle facing uphill is in forward gear; vehicle backing uphill is in REVERSE gear).
