Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Well,

I was out a few days ago at Birubi Point with the Jeep.

Yes, gingerly I got onto the beach in the tidal area as the dunes are closed. I went from the rock area where you let your tyres down to the beach area in 4hi. No dramas. Stayed 4hi on the packed sand then moved up the beach to the dry soft sand at the high tide area (very soft). I was following my dad's x-trail.

1. Got the 'Clean radar sensor' message. There was not much dust whatever was there was blown away by the wind and I was a fair distance back.
2. Then the 'FCW OFF' message came on then went off after a few seconds.

I stopped and went 4lo. No dramas. I remeber someone mentioning on the forums that harsh braking may cause the failure so I gave the brakes a hit to stop the car in both 4hi and 4lo at various times in the soft and hard sand. No warnings came up.

Anyway after a stop on the beach it was time to head back. ESC OFF light was on as I was in sand mode, almost immediately the ESC Activation/Malfunction light came on and stayed on not for a few km's as per book but about 20k's, then went out.

Thats all the lights that I had come on.

I was really keen to try the harsh braking to see what happens. Rather it be there where help is than out in the middle of lonely nowhere.

Good call. I'm not sure if there is a fuse for that either...

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

I noticed that 4x4 Australia published another letter today in their November issue regarding the sand failure and a response from Chrysler credited to one Leonre Fletcher. According to Fletcher, Chrysler are aware of the issue, have a software upgrade which will be applied during regular servicing. No mention of a recall or direct contacting customers.

So while my car has been fixed, there are a whole lot of customers who will be none the wiser, and the first time they take their family down the beach - guess what - stuck.....

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

At least Chrysler/Jeep has been able to fix these issues with software upgrades to date. With such a technically advanced car there will always be issues, what I wish is that Chrysler/Jeep would advise owners as soon as these issues arise so we don't find out about them in dangerous or vehicle damaging situations. Surely it would have to be in their best interests to head of bad press and look after the customers that have paid $50 - 80 grand for their vehicles, you would you at least think so.

Exactly.

Chrysler do get these things fixed, but they like to do it the hard way.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Does anyone know if this update is now being applied as part of standard services at this point?
Jasman.

There's a few fuses that are shared by ABS and Traction Control systems. Looks like if you disable the ABS by pulling the fuse, then the traction control system would become inoperative too so there may be no 4wd anyway.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

When you go in for your next service, just drop a handful of sand on the counter, and see if they get the hint.

I'll be rushing out to get this today to help persuade the service centre to apply the fix. I just finished reading the letters in the Oct issue and was wondering when the Nov issue would be released.

I cannot understand why Chrysler/Jeep haven't advised anyone, I was wanting to head out on the sand, and being a new GC owner, I had no idea, and I just happened to stumble across this forum trying to find info on running boards. Getting stuck with the family (2 young children), I would have had a lot of choice words to say to Chrysler/Jeep when I got back if I got stuck.
