Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Just stick it in 4Lo and all 4 wheels are guaranteed to get power even if you get the error displayed (but remember it must be in 4Lo first, reports are that you cannot get it into 4Lo after you get the error until the error is reset).

Good to hear they are looking after you.

Mate, everyone is going to have their own level of comfort in respect of what they are willing to risk in any 4x4 situation. Personally, I've had the "fix" applied, have a front and rear recovery hook and recovery gear and I have a fair bit of beach driving experience but I was still nervous about heading onto the beach the first time. I have a young family and the prospect of a very long walk, an expensive recovery or worst case, loss of the car when the tide came in freaked me a touch. But the GC performed fine, so all good.

If you are intending to drive on the beaches at Port Macquarie you will need a permit - $26 from the tourist info in town.

Good luck!

Although I was a member I went out none the wiser a little over 12 months ago. I have spent two 1 week holidays on Fraser is with no problems. I drove up to great sandy cape through soft sand for a prolonged period no problems. I have a friend who went to moreton island got bogged b/c of driver error but no tech problems. Whilst this problem is widespread and Brett reasonably believes every car is susceptible, I'm not convinced. As stated above only you can make the decision to venture out into the sand based on your scenario and willingness to accept financial and physical risk to your vehicle and family. If you have a friend with you willing to pull you out, not much harm can come of it as long as you both understand how to do a safe sand recovery. Google pat callinan on you tube for a good little 5 minute instruction video. In any event I agree with Brett that being in 4wd low before any problems appear will keep 4 wheels spinning. Good luck.

GMWK2. What Tyre pressure were you driving with on the sand in PM. What time does the high tide come in and what time is the low tide? Lastly what road did you enter the beach from?

I'm getting mine fitted/updated tomorrow along with the 20km service at John Hughes Vic Park.

FYI jeep are fitting a front recovery hook for free. All vehicles ordered before Jan 20 2012 are entitled to a free fitment.

Oh no.

I'm worried if you are asking a question like this - do you understand how tides work? High and low tides change every day. Best place to look up tides is on the Maritime NSW website.

I ran 20psi, but the sand was hard packed.

I would recommend that anyone new to 4x4 always go with someone experienced or do a course to learn some basic skills and find out in a controlled environment what your car and yourself are capable of undertaking.

But it is your call in respect of what you are willing to try on your own.

I have my car booked in for the Fix on Monday. Shona has been very helpful and restored my confidence in Fiat Chrysler. I just need to have my towing costs reimbursed then I'll be a happy man.

I dug up old copies of emails from my dealer when I was chasing mine early last year - the relevent bits are :

XXX's vehicle does indeed qualify for a recovery hook kit, as it was
ordered prior to the sales teams being notified of the change of specification of MY2012 models.

I have read the bulletin and the 20th is the cut off date is there any
flexibility for this customer?

So basically, If you ordered before 20/1/12, you should get the recovery hook for free.

I ordered my GC in Sept 2011.

GMWK2.... Don't worry mate is am sure my common sense will prevent me from doing anything drastic. I will speak to the information desk to obtain high low tide times on the day.....

Was the beach quite busy with other 4wd?
