Guys can you confirm that getting the 4wd issue fixed is simply a software update and no physical removal of any module or component is required? Where did I read that Melbourne had to program some module and send it up to the dealer? I am having to take a day off tomorrow and I don't want to do it in vain

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Further to your report Brett, on soft sand when turning reasonably sharply with a bit of speed, you can generate a loud screech from between the tyre and the sand....I've heard it many times when driver training on the beach. At Robe on the dry white sand beaches it sounds awful.
Also the vibration you experienced may have been a wodge of dampish sand on a front wheel rim - I've experienced that as well.
I can bet you weren't too happy behind the wheel though - unfortunate that we can't be confident in the electronics just yet. At least the Jeep got you in and out of Fraser!!

From what I understand, previously the update had to be done by a trained technician. Either one was brought into the dealership, or if none available, the ECU had to be shipped to the technician for updating and return.
However, reportedly, a update disk has been issued which should allow dealers to do this update without the need for a trained technician.
Additionally, the fix using the dealer's disk is NOT available if you have the 3.45 diff (Overland CRD). Presumably, if you have that diff, the fix still requires the trained tech.
So, before you waste your time, contact your dealer, give them your VIN number and ask do they have a fix for you.

As well as Overland, cars with Offroad Adventure II pack have the 3.45 diff.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

I had a reasonably lengthy discussion with Shona from Fiat Chrysler Group (FCG) today about the sand issue, the DRL issue and the satnav issue and got clarification regarding the sand issue in particular. Shona is happy for me to relay that conversation to this forum.

The stuck in sand issue while potentially affecting JCG around the world, has only occurred so far in Australia, possibly due to our unique topography and climate. FCG has been liaising with the Jeep engineers in the USA who have been relying on the Australian data to determine what the issue is and how to fix it. FCG were advised by Jeep that two permanent solutions had been developed for the JGC, one for each diff ratio and that was supposed to have been released to FCG last Friday for distribution to the dealer network. Neither permanent solution has been received by FCG and they are chasing Jeep to get an ETA when the permanent fix will be available.

A temporary fix had been developed for one of the models but only 2 people in Australia can apply the fix. They have stopped applying that fix as they were expecting a permanent solution as per the advice above. Anybody who had the temporary solution will still have to come back in for the permanent fix to be applied. All the affected owners who are recorded on the case will be advised when the permanent solution is released and everyone else will have it applied at their next service.

Regarding the DRL issue, Shona said they simply have not been getting any information back from the service departments advising of the issue, so it would appear not to be as widespread as it is. What needs to happen in that the service department is supposed to submit a "Quality Information Report" to head office noting the issues and this has not been happening. In my case, the service dept noted it on my vehicle history, but that does not feed back to FGC. If you have the DRL issue, don't assume that information has been sent to Melbourne. Ask the service dept to complete a Quality Information Report and send it to FCG. They won't be treating this as a defect until they get evidence that it is an issue across the range, similar to the sand issue.

Likewise, the more specific information that can be provided regarding the Satnav issues the better.

Shona was very receptive and helpful. I think she was being quite frank and there is obviously some communication issues between the dealer network and FCG that have delayed information reaching the right people to allow them to be addressed.

Bottom line, unless the Quality Information Reports are being submitted noting the faults, FCG will not be apprised of the scale of a problem and this will inevitably lead to delays in engineering an appropriate solution.

Hello, I am new to this forum and have had the same stuck in the sand problem with my 2012 GC CRD Laredo. I've found the information here to be very helpful. Until reading the posts here I just assumed it was something I had or hadn't done that caused the problem. Now I realise there definitely is an issue with the car which is very disappointing, but hopefully it will be resolved soon. It looks like you have all been working very hard to get a fix and I thank you for that. Today I rang my service centre and booked the car in to be checked, so will be interesting to see what the outcome of that is. We are in Sydney.

Thanks for your feedback John.
Yeah I know the noise generated by tyre and sand, but this was different. It also happened on a boarded timber road with no sand on it, where there was definitely not enough wheel spin to cause the noise I heard.
I agree absolutely that some sand wedged in between tyre and rim could
have caused the vibration. Hopefully that's all it was!
Other than that I really am impressed with the Jeep capability on the sand. The first 4 days of our trip on Fraser was extremely dry and the sand was very powdery. People were getting stuck all over the place. I pulled 2 Prado's out of the bog at various stages with ease. Even saw a brand new v8 diesel landcruiser get bogged where the GC's had no problems.

Copy and paste into this thread or a PM would be much appreciated..
The email I received is below:

"It is expected that the Remedy would be released to all Service Centres on 25-January-2013, essentially today.

However, if the update is released on 25-January-2013 in the US, it would effectively be available to us tomorrow.

To have the update completed, all that is required is an Appointment being made with your local Service Centre and the vehicle made available to them, for a short time."

I'll this up and see if I can get a TSB from her. I'll post this up as soon as I get a reply.

Welcome J & K.

Sorry to hear you are having these problems with your car too. But you are right, there is a group here who are working pretty hard to get this issue resolved by FCG and a solution appears to be close....

Which dealer are you using?
