You will find that jeep assist had said there may be tow hooks. And also exlr8 said that the service had told him that the issue was fixed.

Exlr8 did you have it in low range prior to getting it bogged.

Exlr8 that must have been very scary moment for you and embarrassing for all the jgc owners.

Yes, scary. Up there with one of the most stressful things I have had to deal with.

Check with your dealer and push them for the tow hook for free. Apparently if your car was ordered in 2011 but delivered in 2012, you are eligible for the tow hook.
It's a MY13 ordered in 2012 so no joy there. I really thought this thing would handle what I would throw at it easy, hence decided the tow hooks would not be a deal breaker. Obviously it cannot be relied upon to do what it is supposed to do though.

Agreed. With that I carried a snatch strap and travelled with two others. I also "tested" it in the sand for approx 15km prior to getting bogged, almost all of it all in a safe place. I stopped less than 500m from the destination. and couldn't get that forward tow to get there.
We were the only people traveling in a group on this beach too (about 4 single 4WD's passed in the few hours). So it wasn't considered "difficult" terrain by any standard.
The things I could have done better.
* Not believe the Jeep Dealer and read this thread in full first.
* Have a front tow hook that Jeep cannot provide fitted.

Were my preparations unreasonable (it is just a question, not having a go)?

Keep it in low range sand mode until the fix is here.

All grand cherokee's come with a tow point BUT i would never put too much stress on this tow point, a flat tow on bitumen may be OK so long as its a flat road

What you need is a rated RECOVERY point on the front

Something that will take some stress without pulling out and killing some one.

I would say that maybe we all need to undertake a group action against jeep australia as the vehicle 'Is not fit for purpose' as it can not be recovered in a 4x4 situation

Jeep fantastic vehicle except i needs rated front recovery points .

I was looking at a 2011 jgc over the weekend and staring at those two front hooks. They hardly protrude out and i can't understand how they possibly could damage the pedestrian any more than they would coming under the monster.

I also don't understand why they would have gone out of their way to only provide one mounting point on the left and a tow point on the right. What are they thinking. Its s if they don't want us take the jeep off roar

I know my wife is keen for us to push this as we specifically bought the vehicle to go off road onto the beach, etc as we clearly stated to salesmen. We paid the extra $15-20K for this car over another SUV we were looking at ONLY because it had off road ability (where the SUV did not). Agreed, it is currently not fit for purpose.

In all honesty, you are going to be hard pressed to obtain the free recovery hook, unless you can prove the dealer deceived you in thinking the GC came with them. Those who purchased from orders placed in 2011, got the hook free of charge due to the dealers not being aware that the hook had been omitted during the build. Your only chance would be to scream loud enough about the problem you faced and hopefully HQ in Melb may relent and make an exception.
I agree that the car is "not fit for purpose" due to the sand issue, however, if there is a fix about to be released, then that should overcome that issue. It does not help with the history, but I personally think you will be wasting your efforts to persue it. I know it isn't the best result, but perhaps you could look at the ARB bullbar solution, with a possible winch, in the near future.

I would have to agree allypally we would be hard pressed to get a win now IF the Sand issue solution is only weeks away, I am a little surprised it hasn't been pressed harder by now, particularly people that purchased over a year ago.
A bullbar/winch solution would obviously be overkill (in cost and purpose) just so you can do some sand driving. The funny thing is, the front hooks were removed because of pedestrian safety (my understanding) yet now we are considering bullbars to resolve the problem now created by removal. Got to love these ADR/ANCAP boffins silo thinking sometimes.
I would just be happy if I could get an OEM solution (at a realistic cost) to the front tow hooks (in addition to fixing the sand issue).

Wasn't ADR boffins that caused this stupidly
It is a combination of Jeep Australia telling Jeep USA that Australia was going to adopt the EU rules
But also Jeep only want to make one version for export
So hence we get shafted
