Fair enough. In any case it is interesting to see the consequences of silo thinking.... Fix one issue to create more issues that weren't properly considered.

I am a little surprised it hasn't been pressed harder by now, particularly people that purchased over a year ago.
This WAS pushed very hard by a small group of owners, resulting in the recovery hook that we now have being developed by Jeep - not great but something at least. This early group all had the recovery hook, once developed early last year, fitted for free. This was on the basis that we ordered based on the specifications of the MY11, which was changed without notice for the MY12.

I guess more recent owners have purchased cars without the recovery hook unaware of the issue. Buyer beware! Lots of 4x4's are sold without rated recovery hooks, so the GC as it currently is being sold is no different and I think you would have a tough time arguing fit for purpose. The recovery hook is available as an accessory.

I certainly learnt a lot from this whole exercise, like how the CTTT works! I will be far more diligent when it is time to replace in a years time. I know this does not help exlr8, I feel your pain. The whole Jeep thing has been a total nightmare, recovery hooks, sand failures, non existant owners manuals....Good thing I love the car!

Sorry, I was referring to the sand issue. Over 2 years to fix the software...

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

And the sand issue.

Again, there has been a few owners who have been very busy working away in the background on getting the sand failure issue sorted, which is why I continually post here - to try an gee up support and get other owners to make a noise. Personally, I had the temporary fix applied in September last year, I've had my GC on the beach a few times and have had no problems - in fact the GC has been fantastic in the sand. But I'm still determined to get this sorted once and for all with a permanent fix I can have confidence in. Just like everyone else, I have a family and a big dollar investiment in the car. Having any doubt about the car when off the beaten track is simply unacceptable to me. Otherwise I would of kept my old 4x4.

As Winston said - I will fight them on the beaches....

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

I'm sorry to hear of your story exlr8. The serv 4wd issue also happened to me at Double Island point. In my case I had not heard of the issue and at the time didn't even realise that only 2 wheels were spinning. All I did know was that I was stuck with the tide coming in fast and the car was just digging in to the sand. Luckily we managed to dig it out and get down to the hard sand fairly quickly and easily (I had previously gotten the front recovery point fitted free of charge - again something I would not have realised if not for this forum)

I can say that I worked very hard to get the sand fix, and it would have been much more difficult if not for the advice of those on this forum who went through the pain before me.

For me this has raised a couple of seriously astounding deficiencies on the part of Jeep/Chrysler, etc. I understand that with the level of sophistication in these vehicles that problems will be inevitable. However, for it to take up to a year to fix a known issue and continue to sell the vehicle under false pretenses to unsuspecting customers is just wrong. It is most definitely unethical, it is seriously misleading, it is knowingly putting people at risk - it is just blatant incompetence of the highest degree.

In my experience there is absolutely no way that it can take this long for a fix to be developed.... unless the only way to fix the issue properly is costly, has regulatory or safety issues, or adversely affects some other important function of the vehicle.

As I've mentioned previously I suspect that the temporary fix is that the centre diff is locked in sand mode, so this may provide a clue as to why it is just the temporary solution (though it works, and I personally am more than happy to have it locked when in sand mode). And I must say that I am now very confident with the vehicle in the sand with the temporary fix.

I personally am taking any promised date for a fix with a grain of salt. If you do want to get back on the sand insist on getting the replacement module (now that you have "qualified").

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Thanks Brett. Same place I encountered the issue and I have exactly the same opinion of the issue, particularly...

"However, for it to take up to a year to fix a known issue and continue to sell the vehicle under false pretenses to unsuspecting customers is just wrong. I do feel I was mislead particularly after the fact I made it VERY clear I wanted the car to take onto the beach. This in addition to a salesman's statement regarding Jeep Assist prior to purchase, but that is a story for another thread.

I'm taking the car for it's 10K service next week so I'll ask about the replacement module. Is there any particular module name, etc? (sorry, it is probably somewhere in this 48 page thread).

Whoever rings up insist on speaking to Shona, others make promises of calling you back after they have done their investigation/speaking to the dealers but never do. I must have made half a dozen calls, only to be told I will speak to the dealer and get back to you. Very frustrating.

Next time I ring I am going to bring up the topic of tow hooks. Long shot but I will give it a go.

I too want to go to the beach
But have little confidence from all the issues
Lack of concern from Jeep

Also the issue of the recovery points on the front
I also make it very clear that i would be using this vehicle and purchased this vehicle for only 2 reasons
1/ to go 4 x 4 driving
2/ to tow my caravan to my favorite camping spot to go 4 wheel driving.

Where is the ACCC on these issues

The ACCC has a simple on-line complaint process :

Contact the ACCC | ACCC

The more people that lodge a complaint - the more likley they are to act.

Department of Fair Trading (in NSW) also has an on-line complaint form. Chyrsler took notice when I used this process to get replacement tyres and the recovery hook free of charge.

All i can say is I haven't been on here for a long time. Some people may remember my earlier posts on the sand subject and unexplained vehicle locking. Everyone should become very familiar with the section 54 and 55 of the Australian consumer law. I'm also hoping the 2014 solves the issue. However it's not an issue I currently need to worry about.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Noticed that there is another letter to the editor in April 4x4 Australia magazine . Same old useless response from Leone Fletcher, customers who suffer the failure should contact their dealer blah blah blah.

Best hope at the moment seems to be latest advice that a remedy will be available ex USA around 22/3.

We shall see.

In the interim, the more people who lodge online complaints with ACCC or DFT and get in their system the better.
