Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

So I had the software upgrade done today. As I said before - it was a pure software issue and no parts were replaced. The service guy would not give me a copy of the Bulletin but I did get a quick read and noted that the upgrade is related to both snow and sand function and is related to sensors for the ABS not operating correctly in low traction situations.

So unfortunatley I cannot help with a TSB number, but there is a formal Bulletin with the dealers with clear instructions on what needs to be done. I do have a case number from my enquiries with HQ, but I doubt this would help anyone else.

I should be able to get on the sand later in the month, so Ill see then if there is any noticable change in performance or displayed warning lights.

If I don't remember wrong, you had a module replaced for the temporary fix so maybe the new fix is module + new software?

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

The change in module was only because the work experience mechanics at the dealerships did not know how to install the software.
Now, apparently they do.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

I have to take the car back for a few minor things (re-attach badge, recovery hook). Looks like I can add this completed upgrade now! I must admit, I am surprised they actually got it done, mind you, I would like to see this tested in the real world environment first...

The temporary fix was applied in two ways - either by one of the HQ techs coming to the dealer and the flash applied direct to the module in situ - this is how mine was done back in September last year. I understand this only occured in the first few early cars.

The other option was the module was removed, sent to Melbourne for reprogramming, returned and then reinstalled back in the car (or indeed a whole new module was installed). I think this happened in later months.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Just got my 30,000kms service done today at John Hughes Vic Park Perth and I asked for a fix for the dropping out of 4WD drive issue and they mentioned they installed an update for it..!

They didnt say or document any TSB number but did as mentioned above that it seems to be a software update for the ABS module...

I have had the lights flash up when being on the sand before but it never dropped into 2WD for me as I was in 4wd Low Range at the time. So time will tell not sure when I will get into the sand to try it at this stage...

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

I think the only way you'll know is trying it in the sand (take a mate and recovery gear!). I was told mine had the latest software and had no issues. The service tech also mentioned the software wouldn't work on their computers for some reason, one bloke had to be flown around with it on his laptop. This may have changed now though.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

A small update.

I have been advised that the software will be applied to all vehicles as a matter of course during normal servicing - you should get it even if you dont ask for it, presuming your dealer knows what they are doing and keep up to date with the HQ bulletins.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Seeing as I live in Kuwait, I'm always off roading during the weekends in the desert areas away from all the city pavement.

I have never had any issues on sand (be it rough or soft sand).

Small dunes, big dunes, flat sand, all seems to go great with my 2011 WK2 Overland Hemi. I have the QL package. My only issue is that when I bought mine, there was one piece left in the colour and model I wanted. The only thing is they didn't have anything other than 20" wheels and they were not very compliant in letting me switch the 20" with 18" wheels when I bought the car.

It's all good though, the current set up is great for on road which I am on about 5-6 days a week. However, I would like to goto a bigger tire size. I just never bothered to figure out what the largest tire size I can hop up to without having any future set backs because of the tire size.

Anyone know what the largest tire size I can throw on 20"s for the QL? Park mode is pretty low, so I guess I should just take measurements. But I don't really know much about tires and wheels. I hear it can effect the drivetrain etc. Anyone shed some light on this?
