Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

This is a major concern for me. I've got a CRD Limited on order to replace my 08 Hilux and I generally get up the beach a few times a year.

Has anyone successfully done some sand work in these cars? I'm going to be furious if the vehicle is incapable of beach work.

From what I can see, the 4wd system shuts down and it becomes RWD only and you can't re-engage 4wd? I've done some scouring and there are heaps of photos of WK2's on the beach with the rear buried up to the sills and the fronts sitting on the top. I'm starting to panic over this.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Ok, so it can be done - just hope I'm not one of the unlucky ones.

Going on past experience with cars, I will be.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

It may be due to build date, who has had success or fail on sand and what is the build date (month/year).
I bet we may be able to diagnose the problem before Jeep AU does. I expect it has to do with Quadrlift and quadra drive.

My build date is 03-2012. Keep in mind that TSB 08-034-12 fixed my problem. I've been on the beach quite a few times since the fix, and did the Bribie inland track (approx 27 km's of deep soft sand) yesterday all in high range sand mode without any problems.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

So I emailed Jeep in Melbourne specifically asking if the TSB referred to my vehicle built November 2011 (MY2012). This was after my dealer told me it did not refer to my vehicle

Here is their reply :

We have received your correspondence forwarded to the Marketing Team, regarding concerns with your vehicle.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to assess and diagnose your vehicle over the phone or the internet, therefore we will not be able to supply you with the requested document.

The Customer Assistance Centre and also our Marketing Team, will not be able to supply you with any Mechanical or Technical Information regarding your vehicle and if you require in-depth discussion on the concern(s) raised, then we must refer you to your nearest or preferred Authorised Jeep Service Centre.

As per your correspondence, the vehicle does fit within the build-dates listed in the TSB. Please note that this TSB and all others, form an Internal Document and are not intended for public distribution and/or dissemination. It is a tool used to provide important updates to the Dealership Network.

So they have just shunted me back to the dealer, however they did confirm that my vehicle does fit within the build dates for the TSB - which is where I started!

Agh!!

Did this happen while in low range (with the centre diff locked)?

The WK2s are never really out of 4WD or rather AWD. Even in sport mode there is still a 20/80 split between front and back. I haven't had a problem on sand but then I don't use low range. I don't see the need. I just put it in sand mode and the computer does the rest. I suspect half the problem is inexperience with computerised traction control and insufficient tyre pressure reduction.

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Thanks BobT, I'm well experienced at sand driving, so will follow your advise and just use the sand mode. 4 low is generally not required on sand, I will also always lower the pressures as it is easier on the vehicle and much kinder to the trails.

It was not in low range. I did select sand/mud mode. Tyre pressures were 16 psi all round.
