I think until there is fix for people who keep on experiencing this problem, low range needs to be used. Having the centre diff locked will ensure that power is sent to the front and rear axles. Yes it is a pain in the backside, and you can't go faster than 40k's, but at least you can get out there and enjoy a day visit / camp on the beach!

I was in low range and it happened to me. I wonder if it has anything to do with the different 4wd systems? Quadratrac and quadradrive

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

I have been reading all related forums for the last 12 months and summarize below

It can happen at all tyre pressures
It can happen in high or low range
It can happen in sand or auto mode
It can happen with experienced or inexperienced drivers
There is a fix that works for some and not others

Hope this helps! Jeep need to pull their finger out and resolve this issue

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Further to my post at #68, my dealer has now agreed to apply the TSB to my vehicle.

I'll arrange it over the next few days.

Here is their reply :

We have received your correspondence forwarded to the Marketing Team, regarding concerns with your vehicle.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to assess and diagnose your vehicle over the phone or the internet, therefore we will not be able to supply you with the requested document.

The Customer Assistance Centre and also our Marketing Team, will not be able to supply you with any Mechanical or Technical Information regarding your vehicle and if you require in-depth discussion on the concern(s) raised, then we must refer you to your nearest or preferred Authorised Jeep Service Centre.

As per your correspondence, the vehicle does fit within the build-dates listed in the TSB. Please note that this TSB and all others, form an Internal Document and are not intended for public distribution and/or dissemination. It is a tool used to provide important updates to the Dealership Network.

So they have just shunted me back to the dealer, however they did confirm that my vehicle does fit within the build dates for the TSB - which is where I started!

Agh!!
It took them 144 weasel words to say, "Please see a dealer"

Re: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

I've had a chat to both the dealer and Chrysler Fiat today. They are aware there is a problem in sand and there is no current fix. A fix is on it's way however, although no timeframes were or could be given by both parties.

Further ..

It occurs to both QD2 and QT2 systems, so it doesnt appear related to ELSD.

It occurs to both steel sprung and Quadralift suspensions, so that TSB to fix the QL issues is not the fix for SERV 4WD errors.

It has been reported to occur on V6 and CRD vehicles, though I havent spotted any reports from hemi owners.

Does anyone know or have a view whether it is somehow related to the tyres. I've had a look but can't find any discussion as to whether it occurs only (or more) with the stock highway tyres compared to all terrains.

I doubt it. The tyres actually pretty good for sand driving and I have them and didn't have a problem. The prevailing theory (although others will disagree) is you don't want an aggressive tread for sand driving. That said all terrains would be fine also. The main thing is air pressure. Also there are people in the US having the same trouble and they have a different OEM tyre

Agreed! Here is a pic of a specialised sand tyre http://www.sandtiresunlimited.com/Smoo.html . In the dune-buggy days people would use worn out tyres.

Hi Bob, I'm not having a go at all and I stand to be corrected but I think you'll find the photo you posted is a steer tyre, the rear tyres on dune buggies and MX bikes set up for sand run a paddle type design. If you ever want to watch something wild find a Crazy Dirt Demons DVD when they're out in the desert, using their paddle drive tyres they do massive jumps between and over dunes and it looks spectacular.
Jasman.
