Jeep - 4x4 Basics - How Jeep 4x4 Systems Work - Quadra-Drive II - 4WD SUVs
That actually seems to be misleading, it is saying that in auto mode in normal driving, torque is split 52/48. Looking at the MP3023 info it seems 100% goes to the rear until slip is detected. The Quadra Trac II page on this site seems to be more accurate. But I'm not sure by the claim that 100% torque can be sent to a single wheel. It seems there is always torque going to the rear, if both rears slip then 50% can go to the front, the rears will still be rotated. If you are relying on brake force to stop the spin, then some torque will be directed to that friction.

That's right a locking diff or transfer case can transfer 100% of available torque to a single wheel/axle. But using brakes to brake a wheel without traction would divide torque 50/50 as the brake would "take" 50% of the force.

As far as I understand this, braking is only used when one wheel on a given axle is spinning faster than the other - but is independent of differences between front/back axle speed. With the MP3023 if both rears slip, then effectively no torque will go to the rear, as there is (almost) zero force required to make them spin (assuming no braking is used, which I believe is the case, and a locked/lockable transfer case - as the MP3023 claims to be).

I think the claim that 100% of torque can be sent to a single would only be true in some circumstances. That would require the single wheel with traction to be one of the rears, and would only apply with quadra drive (rear ELSD). In that case no braking would be needed on the front once the transfer case was "locked", and the rear ELSD was also locked.

I agree. It's marketing blurb. Did you pick up on the difference between Quadra Trac I and II? When a wheel slips QTI "automatically transfers torque to the wheels with greatest traction" whereas QTII "automatically transfers torque to the slipping axle" Huh! Who writes this stuff? They also talk of power in one sentence and torque in the next. Do they really think the average punter knows the difference? The animation for QDII implies that the rear axle can be decoupled. The best sketch I can find, see attached, doesn't make that clear at all. We really need a detailed exploded view. Brett has a point. If both rear wheels are up in the air say, there will be no torque going to them even with the tail shaft locked. Another possibility is that the rear electronic LSD decouples both rear wheels.

There is a line from an old movie "Kellys Hero's" uttered by Donald Sutherland a Sherman Tank driver when it broke down and was asked to help fix it : "Hell Man I just drive them"!

I wish! I'm a retired engineer and adicted to knowing how everything works. I probably need therapy.

What we need to do is rig up 3 rolling jacks, jack up 3 corners and see if the one on the ground moves the car.....

I'm an IT engineer, also need to know how things work.....

I'm an accountant. I'm with Donald Sutherland. And that's one of the reasons why I'm a member of jeep garage, because of all you smart "need to know how it works" types.... Keep on learning.
