The Chief points and plate are easy to install. I did it whilst cooking dinner.

Did you get OR11 and QL?

Nice - I don't think I'll struggle too much then. Just heard a bit about over-tightening the bolts that can cause damage sometimes

As much as I would've liked, NO to both ORII and QL. Mainly due to availability in AU. I can always do the 1 or 2" lift with Stewey Murchison at a later date if we find ourselves bottoming out on the beach a lot.

Cheers,

Matt

Re: Grand Ltd Vs. KL Trailhawk

Yeah, there were some with older models who over tightened the front screws on the sump plate and stripped it. But apparently the MY14/15s have more to bite into there, so not so much of a problem. I tightened mine with a standard socket to low torque by feel, then checked them after each drive for a few weeks. One had started to move, so I tightened it a bit harder and they have been good since then.

Re: Grand Ltd Vs. KL Trailhawk

Update - First Beach Trip

True to my word I took our brand new $60k black beast off the tarmac and straight into the soft stuff within 5 days of picking her up from the dealership !!

We christened her on Teewah Beach - right up to dbl island pt on day 1. Then Day 2 we let her stretch her legs a little more and braved some of the inland tracks (Leisha / Freshwater) to get over to Rainbow beach. Past the notorious MUDLO rocks and up to the rainbow beach township. All on low tide. As some of you may know, a new Patriot Compass was lost in that same spot only days before we got there. But the sand has now returned ready for the Easter hordes.....hopefully no casualties.

Not having done any sand driving for 20 years, it was a little daunting (under statement of the year!) to hit the beach the first time. But my fears were allayed when I saw how capably the grand ploughed through the soft boggy beach cuttings

I had the stock Kumho's down to 18psi and the grand just walked through in sand mode (no low range req'd for the whole trip). Freshwater road was probably the boggiest and longest of the soft tracks, but it only took a fraction of extra push on the pedal if it ever felt like you were loosing momentum, and she just picked straight up and kept going.

We were totally stoked with it's beach capabilities. The Chief recovery hook, Treds, shovel did not even remotely look like getting used for the Cooloolah coastline. I'm sure Fraser might be a different story.... You only have to watch the many you tube clips of the indian head bypass to see how many get stuck right up there!

The underbody wash station ($17 for 3 mins...ouch!) was located at Noosa North shore about 10 mins after you get off the beach, and that was a blessing. They also have a multi-purpose wash station you can do the rest of your truck by hand operated hoses and brushes.

All in all a great baptism, and we look fwd to taking her for plenty more beach trips to come.

**As a side note, do you guys agree it's a good idea to have BOTH Jeep Assist (included for 3 years with new car warranty) as well as RACQ roadside assist??

Cheers,

Matt

Re: Grand Ltd Vs. KL Trailhawk

Cool, its a good drive up there. If they re-open Kings Bore rd that is worth it as well. Last time I was there it was too eroded to get down from the dunes. You may have seen it, a track coming over the dunes near the camp sites about half way up teewah beach.

We'll probably get up there for a run over easter, it will be hectic though.

I'm not sure about jeep assist. The wife has racq ultra care for her car, but it covers any car she is travelling in. And that gives good cover for offroading, even if they don't have a recovery service on fraser island, they will cover the costs of a 3rd party recovery if they determine it was required. And then they include accommodation and car hire too (for 7 days I think).

Re: Grand Ltd Vs. KL Trailhawk

@mattyd, thanks for posting your experience with your decision making process.

While my needs are different (I'm near beaches but not near any you can drive on) I recently went through the decision process of going with either a slightly used WK2 Overland or, for roughly the same price, a new KL Trailhawk. Reading your thread, it's good to know others are going through similar choices.

Yeah mate it was playing on my mind for the best part of 3 months before we made up our minds.

The Trailhawk was just so capable straight off the showroom floor, it seemed ready for anything without having to do any mods.

But at the end of the day there was only about $6k difference between the TH and the GC LTD, and the cargo space and DAB won us over in the end to go down the GC track.

We did loose things like the TH rear diff locker and that awesome approach angle (great for those beach suprises that can sneak up on you!).

But I always said I don't think you would be dissapointed with either, it's really a personal choice.

Matt

Good to hear you're enjoying it Matty.

With regards to the 'swallowed Jeep' pic - if's that a Patriot, then I'm Mary Queen of Scots.

It's a Compass I think.

The underpinnings are the same only. The body is different. The Compass is more swoopy in shape, the Patriot is a big rectangle.

Re: Grand Ltd Vs. KL Trailhawk

Thats what I meant, the styling is different, but they are the same car under the sheet metal. They are often referred to together, the replacement is currently referred to as the Compatriot.....
