Make sure they replace the receiver dryer when they replace the compressor

Fingers crossed that does the trick .

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

Is there any chance that the vibration and noise is not from the AC system, pipes and all, but a slightly faulty IAC valve? I've been scouring the Net and it seems some other brands have the same problem. Some have been diagnosed as a faulty component from the AC system, but others have blamed the IAC valve and more specifically the Reed valve, as that will make that trombone harmonic noise. Some refer to it as a cow noise or a ship horn noise.

Hi There,
Thanks for the heads up on the IAC, but in my case the whole AC pipe work vibrates/shakes like crazy. With the IAC it looks like the howling is heard under the bonnet. In my case even though you can see the pipes "buzzing", you can only hear the noise as it resonates through the dashboard in the cabin.

Ever since I got my Jeep back from service, the noise no longer seems to come from the AC and it's environs. When I had checked the engine and the AC pipes going into the firewall, everything seemed solid, no noticeable moving parts or pipes. Now the noise seems to have moved "outside" and I feel it most through the steering wheel (I have the one with the silent thud - waiting for a new intermediate shaft to come in). The noise is also less intense now and it only occurs at idle. From what I could garner it seems to be the "plunger" type of valve, so if it doesn't open or close properly while it's trying to regulate the air flow that might be the noise that mine is making. I'll monitor it for the next few days and mention it to my dealer when the steering wheel shaft comes in.

Thats my problem, noise only on idle when hot, and although it shakes the hell out of the dash, you can feel it most through the steering wheel.

That is really scary. I can't imagine what it could be. If it was an old petrol engine I would say it was pre-ignition or the timing was way advanced. While you guys are poking about for things that rattle, take a look at the heat shield behind the engine. On my CRD this is rather flimsy and tinny. When I accelerate hard, I get brief tinny resonant rattle. I suspect it's the heat shield. On the other hand, it might be induction noise as the turbo kicks in proper.

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

Its a "harmonic" thing with the dash. As the aircon is moaning, it must make the exact "frequency" of components in the dash. This then causes the most horrible "resonance" sound for a couple of seconds. If you placed anything on top of the dash, it would vibrate itself off onto the floor. Holding the steering wheel is like having one of those practical joke buzzers in the palm of each hand. Car's in Wednesday for it's second round of poking about to try to solve the problem. Right now after the TXV change, they are baffled

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

Bet your getting bored with this, six months on, new TXV, compressor (looking very similar to the one I have on my photo files from August) and radiator fan and no further on. I have had a fridgie look at it tonight, and although he does not profess to be an auto expert advises I should get the high pressure shut off switch (located below the radiator hose adjacent to the washer bottle) changed before the dash comes out, him agreeing that the noise should be prevalent ALL the time if its compressor or valving related, whereas stopped in traffic....heat build up with limited heat rejection across the condensor etc.... would lead him to believe that this switch could be faulty therefore not shutting the compressor down soon enough....excessive high pressure....pipes shaking....sounds reasonable?

Not bored at all! Keep us posted. It's important to get sorted for all our sakes.

At this point it's worth a shot. I feel that the cause of the vibration is in the engine bay area, not behind the dash. It sounds reasonable and might just be the key to this baffling noise. Please keep us posted.

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

Mine is coming from under the bonnet and will only occur when hot. It is more noticeable when the weather is warmer. Mine is due for its 20k km service and I will be mentioning it.

I would try an aircon expert, as the Jeep people are not the best at diagnosing these problems and will just keep replacing parts until you get defeated or it fixes the problem.
